The City of Somerville is pulling out all the stops in its courtship of Google, sending a homemade video to the company last week as part of its bid to become a pilot community for Google's new high-speed broadband network.

The video, narrated by the former “Voice of Somerville” Tom Champion, describes a “historic, sophisticated, and richly diverse” city with a penchant for new technology. Comic relief is provided by local celebrities Jimmy Tingle and Jimmy Del Ponte, who appears atop Prospect Hill dressed as “Lady Google.” At the close of the video, 100 Somerville high school athletes dressed head-to-toe in Google colors spell out the firm's name on Dilboy Field.

There are two fenced-in areas on the bike path between Willow and Cedar (near the park and the old location of the donut factory) that are labeled with Environmental Protection Agency signs. There has been one for quite a while, and now there are two. Any word of what the situation is and any schedule for its remediation?

Mythbusters on Humanism
Now in its fourth year, the HSS Cultural Humanism committee has chosen the recipients for the award, the MythBusters, based on what they feel is an outstanding contribution to Humanism in culture. The MythBusters – special-effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman – take on the task of separating truth from urban legend on their television show with the same name. In true Humanist style, the pair takes on three myths per episode and uses modern-day science to demonstrate, through scientific trials, whether or not some things we take for granted really hold any ground. The award ceremony (April 16 8:00pm Memorial Church) will feature a talk and demonstrations by the pair.

8-10pm Memorial Church, Harvard, April 16th.
