This seems like a cool event for families:

FIRST ANNUAL GREAT SOMERVILLE CAMPOUT, 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7th until Sunday, Aug. 8th: Join us by the campfire for songs, skits, s'mores, and stories. Families and anyone else who likes to camp are
welcome to come spend the night in Lincoln Park on the soccer field. Set up your tents any time after 4:00 p.m. and stay until the next morning. Bring food to grill. There will be a pancake breakfast for anyone who
stays over. If rain is predicted, the campout will occur on Friday, Aug. 6th. The event is being co-sponsored by the Recreation Department and parent volunteers. Contact Stephanie Hirsch with any questions
(shirsch at sprynet.com, 617-512-4847).

Note: I know nothing more about this than what is posted above; I'm just passing this along from a mailing list I'm on. Use the contact info above for questions.

I just received this both as a robo-call and an e-mail:

This is Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department with an important community safety message for residents of West Somerville, and in the vicinity of Red Line MBTA stations. Last Sunday evening, at about 11:00 p.m., a woman who was walking home from the Porter Square MBTA station, was indecently assaulted. She reported that in the vicinity of Summer Street and Belmont Street, she heard footsteps behind her. As she turned around, an unknown white male knocked her to the ground and indecently assaulted her. The victim was able to pepper spray her assailant causing him to cease his attack and flee the area.

The suspect is described as a white male, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, medium build, brown hair, clean shaven and was wearing a white shirt and shorts.

Although we believe this to be an isolated incident, we want to alert residents, especially women, who may be walking in this area, to be especially vigilant. We encourage women to take common sense precautions, be aware of their surroundings and avoid distractions such as headphones and Ipods. If you carry a cell phone, keep it in an easily accessible place.

The Somerville Police Department is working jointly with other police agencies to identify and apprehend this suspect as quickly as possible.

If you see anyone who is acting suspicious in this area, please do not hesitate to call 911.

I remember this issue was discussed before.... I got a call from the Somerville police department (or so the caller said), asking for money for a fundraiser. I assume many others are being called as I write. Personally, I find these calls implicitly pushy and inappropriate and I wish they were illegal.

Anyone lost a cat?

Been seeing a gray shorthair cat with yellow eyes walking around this neighborhood for some time. My friend lives here too and she says she's seen it around since at least the first week of June. He (I think?) is really affectionate and talkative. Anyone know anything about this cat? I'm pretty close to just taking it to the vet for a checkup and trying to find a home for it myself.

Any help appreciated!

If you've been boycotting Shaw's and Star Market because of the strike, you can go back now:

Shaw's strike ends
About four months after more than 300 warehouse workers at Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. walked off their jobs, they have reached an agreement with the supermarket chain over pay and health benefits.

Workers at the Shaw's Metheun distribution center have ratified a four-year contract that effectively ends the strike that began March 8, a day after workers rejected a contract that they say would have resulted in the loss of $28 per week, or about $1,456 annually for people on the family health insurance plans.
