I was walking down the bikepath just on the east side of Willow Ave and noticed the first house along the right side has chicken coops and actual chickens living there!!??!! This may not be new news to people who pass by regularly, but it's been a while since I walked that way, so it was very cool to see them.

Does anybody know whether this is a legal chicken situation, and if so, how the owners got around city laws? I still miss the semi-feral rooster who lived down the street from me a few years ago, and I'd like to see a few more well-cared-for birds around. (Note this means not too loud, not creating smells or hazardous waste, et cetera.)

We are having a room open up around June 1st in our Somerville apartment, near Davis Square, Teele Square, and Tufts.

Who we are: Two males (a Nokia sysadmin who likes playing with swords and theater equipment, and a software engineer who likes playing with insects and cameras) and one female (a Tufts doctoral student who likes martial arts and tango).

We're very sociable, often hang out in common space, and hold regular social gatherings (though not of the loud drunken sort). We are interested in maintaining a strong household community, with open communication channels and shared responsibility in terms of chores. We do not currently have television in common space, and would like to keep it that way.

We generally like pets, but one of the housemates is mildly allergic to fur.

We are alternative-lifestyles and queer-friendly.

The apartment: The apartment is the upstairs unit in a two-family house on a residential street. Hardwood floors throughout. We have a front balcony accessible through the living room window, a screened-in back porch accessible through the kitchen, and access to the back yard in which we are hoping to do some gardening. Full kitchen, with dishwasher and gas stove. Laundry (high efficiency washer and dryer, not coin-op) is in the pantry. Basement opens onto back yard and is great for bicycle parking -- two of us commute by bike.

The open room is 12'5"x15'7", and faces east. The closet is 5'x2'6". Rent for the room is $650, plus utilities (electric, gas, internet).

If you're interested, PM me with your email address and we can start a CC thread with the other housemates.
