I went to last night's meeting about the proposed Roche Bros. store at 240 Elm Street (ex-Social Security building). Although I didn't take detailed notes, I'll summarize it here:

The grocery, a small-format store called 'Brothers Marketplace', will take up the entire first floor. The entrance will be at the corner of Elm and Chester streets. The store will emphasize produce and organic meat, buying from local producers as much as possible. There are two existing 'Brothers Marketplace' stores in Weston and Medfield, both opened within the past few months.

Dunkin Donuts will remain, but will move to the east side of the building and be integrated with the grocery store, sharing a seating area. The store will be built in such a way that Dunkin Donuts can, if they want, keep different hours from the grocery store.

The grocery store will also use about half of the basement for storage, food preparation, employee break rooms, and the like. Existing non-profit and for-profit office tenants in the basement (including the Boylston Chess Club) will be allowed to remain, or to return after construction is finished, but they may need to move within the basement.

Crunch Fitness will take up the entire second floor and part of the third (for their weight room). Davis Square Architects will remain in the other half of the third floor; they are designing this project.

The façade is a conservative design intended to retain the building's existing look, but adding more glass on the Chester Street side.

Construction will take about a year, with the grocery and gym opening in the fall of 2015.

Residents who attended the meeting were generally supportive, but raised issues about the logistics of deliveries and loading. The current plan is to have most deliveries on Chester Street, with current metered parking spaces becoming loading zones during certain hours (probably Monday-Saturday 7 am to 3 pm).

The Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, October 1 at 6 pm at City Hall.

Hey. We're giving away a desk (this one), three years old and in great condition. 60Wx30Dx29H, with four drawers, two of which can be hanging file drawers.

It's on our front porch under a tarp, just dying for a new home. If you're interested, contact me.

Hi all,

I'm not a Davis Square resident, but I know many on this list and I'm in the area frequently.

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is seeking an apartment and may, due to his circumstances, have an impossible request, but it's worth asking.

Long story short, he needs to vacate the apartment he's lived in for over 12 years by October 5th. The multi-family house has been sold. He's seeking a 1 bedroom apartment, not a roommate situation, within a 15 minute walk to the T that allows cats (he has two elderly female and very well behaved cats.) Excellent work and landlord references, etc.

The problem is his budget is extremely tight. $1200 a month is his absolute maximum and, preferably, that would have some utilities covered in the rent. He's searching everywhere, but I'm trying to widen the signal.

If you know of anything or might have leads, feel free to reply or email me directly: julietbowler@comcast.net

Thank you!!

Sherman Cafe has announced on Facebook that they are going out of business this weekend. Their remaining hours, for the next three days:

Friday - 7 am to 3 pm
Saturday - 8 am to 3 pm
Sunday - 8 am to NOON

and that's it.

Established in 2003, Sherman predates many other things people now associate with Union Square: the farmers' market, the Fluff festival, other ArtsUnion events, Bloc 11, Union Square Main Streets, and trendy ethnic restaurants.

Since their Facebook page could disappear soon after they close, I'm repeating their entire announcement behind this lj-cut:ExpandSherman Cafe's closing announcement )

They also commented on Union Square Main Streets' Facebook page:Expandcomment )

Friday: Arlington Town Night starts at 5 pm at Spy Pond Field, with FIREWORKS over Spy Pond at 8 pm.

Saturday: Arlington Town Day, 10 am to 3 pm, on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Center, between Pleasant/Mystic and Jason streets. This event is to Arlington what ArtBeat is to Somerville, with lots of music, food vendors, and booths from local organizations.

Saturday: Assembly Row Riverfest, starts at 11 am, with FIREWORKS over the Mystic River at 8 pm.

Saturday night: Project MUM 2014: Retro-futurism, 8 pm to midnight, at the former Waste Management incinerator site, 10 Poplar Street, just across McGrath Highway from Target. (The traditional Meet Under McGrath site is unavailable due to construction, and the event has gotten too large to ever fit there again anyway.)

Sunday: Somerville Dog Festival, 10 am to 3 pm at Trum Field.

If you know of any other local outdoor event that should be listed here, please add a comment.
