Somerville has lifted its snow emergency as of 12:30 today. According to the website, anyone who parked their vehicle in one of the alternative city lots instead of on the street has until 2:30 to move their vehicle or else it will be ticketed or towed.

Now, I think giving folks only 2 hours- especially in the middle of a work-day- is something that needs to be changed. I think this should be the next goal, tweaking this policy and making it more realistic.

are you kidding? the city would lose out on all the ticket revenue.

i'm surprised the city didn't tow the cars parked on the even side of my street - they only got tickets.

That's the shit that pisses me off. If you're going to ticket, at least tow. The reason for towing the cars is so that the street actually gets plowed. If the city isn't actually interested in that outcome, why bother?

So, either go all-out, or leave it alone. Otherwise, the street will remain a hazard.

i agree. now there's even fewer spaces since they couldn't get around those cars. luckily, i took the train to work today and left my car buried...

One person can ticket a lot more cars than one person can tow. My experience has been that they tow the snow emergency routes first, which is probably a good call.

But ticketing cars that they don't tow does provide incentive for people to move their cars - I think most people prefer not to have to pay the ticket, even if it's less inconvenient than having to get your car back from the tow yard.

even if you don't move it, at least make an effort to dig your car out. I've seen them enforce the "must move car every 2 days" rule 48 hours after the snow has stopped because it's very easy to see who hasn't moved. they won't tow you for it though, thankfully, just keep piling on the tickets until you notice and move your car two inches to the left.

Perhaps they were thinking people would be home. My office was closed monday due to inclement weather.
