Now that the weather is getting nice I'm spending more time out and about, but this has caused a big dent in my wallet. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for inexpensive or even free things to do around the Square or elsewhere.

Thanks!

Not sure if they are doing it this year, but the Somermovie-Fest is fun and right on the square. Also, check out http://www.theatreatfirst.org. They have fun stuff going on sometimes!

But it's still March -- those outdoor movies don't start until July.

Check out the Boston Knowledge calendar: http://bit.ly/c9cuWN It's an online calendar of free events going on at colleges in the area.

You can also check out tuftslife.com for events going on at Tufts. Many lectures and concerts are free and open to the public.

TuftsLife is a student-run calendar and has many of the student events. For other events, check out the university-run calendar at events.tufts.edu

You can get free or reduced admission to most area museums with passes from the Library. You can reserve them online ahead of time.

If you are a Bank of America customer, they have "Museums on Us" the first full weekend of each month. Free admission to the MFA, Harvard Natural History Museum and DeCordova Museum & Sculpture park with your BOA card.

The MFA is free on Wednesday evenings after 4.

It's only sorta-kinda free, but I'm a big fan of the Audubon Sanctuaries. Drumlin Farm is a quick ride on the commuter rail and free if you're a member. Usually there's a discount on memberships this time of year. Other cool and nearby(ish) sanctuaries include Broadmoor in Natick, Ipswich River Sanctuary in, duh, Ipswich, and the Boston Nature Center. http://www.massaudubon.org

Speaking of Nature Centers, the Somerville Growing Center often has cool events that are cheap/free. http://www.thegrowingcenter.org/

The Harvard Museum of Natural History is free for Mass. residents on Sunday mornings. They have glass flowers and dinosaurs!

Someone else has mentioned the museum passes at the libraries. But let me suggest... the libraries! Somerville Public Library often has free events. You can also get out books from the library and spend a long and lovely afternoon outside, reading a book and sipping an iced tea. This is essentially my idea of a perfect day.

Go to a different stop on the T every weekend and just walk around the neighborhood. There are a LOT of stops on the T.

Myself, I love people watching in Davis, on Newbury St., or at the Public Garden. Take a picnic lunch and make up stories about the people walking by. (That one there just broke up with her husband. She left him for her hot yoga instructor. They are flying to Belize tomorrow and she's out buying a sexy bathing suit....)

If you play an instrument, you can use it to torment passersby. If you are a substandard player a sign along the lines of "All tips go to Viola lessons" should be enough to pry some coin from your victims audience.
