Hey all. Mostly a lurker seldom a poster... however, thought I'd turn to you all. Thought I'd ask for some local advice/recs.

It's been a million years since I went out to eat in the North End, and my daughter wants to go there for her birthday this weekend. She'll be 17 tomorrow. We are a family of 5, with the youngest turning 13 in a couple of weeks, oldest is 19. And, well, me and hubby are.. .old.

Anyhow, recommend any good resturants? Obviously, nothing outragously priced, cause, like, there's FIVE OF US. But, you know, mid-priced. Looking for good, authentic Italian, which, I'm hoping is not unusual there. I'm ashamed to say I'm first generation Italian, (and used to live there....) and tho I don't know where to go, I'd like some place with good food, not just the "oh it's Italian cause it has sauce on it" kinda place.

And, obviously, since there's five of us, someplace comfortable. (hate being squeezed in a booth for 4).

Looking forward to hearing about some yummy eats!

:D

...and I'm hungry all of a sudden.

http://www.bacconorthend.com/ Entrees around $20 ea. They do pack you in a bit tightly. But one of my favorite places.

OP, by "authentic Italian", authentic where Italian? Bacco is more northern, and one of my new favs is Maurizio's (now WAY hungry) which is Sardegnan. Entrees around $23 ea. Bacco's has the classier atmosphere, while Maurizio's is more "romantic hole-in-the-wall".

Can YOU tell the difference?

Er... yes? I think so? Like they're pretty different cuisines, no? Like most Americans of my generation, I was brought up thinking "Italian" == "Sicilian red sauce", but then I was introduced to the rest of it when I started going to fancier restaurants.

... of course you can tell the difference. I'm from Northern Italy, our food is only vaguely similar to most Southern Italian cuisine.

This. Our landlords live below us and are from Calabria. Needless to say, we get a LOT of "authentic Italian" here at home and Southern cuisine is way, way different from Northern.

Seconded. We went there once for Restaurant Week and the food was very tasty. Good bar, too.

Took me twenty minutes to find it, but you may find this compendium of North End reviews to be useful: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/448599 (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/448599).

Try La Summa - the Chowhound folks and my wife's colleagues recommended it the last time we were looking for a restaurant like that, and it was great

Antico Forno is my go-to for dinner in the North End. A bit cozy, but moderately priced and delicious. The melanzane appetizer is just as good as my mom's version, which is saying a lot. :)

Yes! I went there with my mom over the summer. I swiped some of the sauce from my boyfriend's chicken parm and it was damn delicious.

We love Mother Anna's (http://www.motherannas.com/), and it's always a treat for us when we go there. It's as old-school North End as it gets. I don't think it's either Northern or Southern Italian. It's Italian-American cuisine, which is to say, the best comfort food in the world. Check the menu I linked and see if it appeals. If the weather is nice you can eat on their patio. I always feel like a kid again when I go.
