We stopped by and had dinner there and were pleasantly surprised. They were full, but we were were able to get a table quickly. The staff went out of their way to be friendly, helpful, and very professional.

The pizza was quite tasty and very unlike most American pizzas. The sauce was very flavorful and the outer crust was quite chewy (in a good way).

They have a wide variety of wine options (ranging from $5/glass to $20/glass). They have a machine that pumps argon into the more expensive glasses to enable them to offer expensive wine-by-the-glass, which is nifty.

This is also the best the space has looked, by-far (although it wasn't too bad as Carberry's). It has a classy, warm, and elegant feel to the space (unlike Boloco which was just sterile and cold). The high ceilings make it feel like a fancy loft-space restaurant, so it works. It should be nice with the doors open in the summer.

We will certainly be back!

I went with friends early Saturday night (5:40ish) and was also quite impressed. Clearly they were in full shake-down mode as we were greeted by the manager.

The arancini appetizers were really fabulous, and the prosciutto pizza was really tasty, especially with a $5 glass of wine. Oddly, if I recall correctly, there was not a single wine listed range between $6-11 at all, which surprised me - it was 5/12/20. Our friends ordered the spaghetti and meatballs for their 4 year old, and even that was tasty. We didn't have a chance to sample dessert (anyone try the zeppole?)

It definitely is on the pricier end for Davis, but if it can keep a buzz and maintain a high level of service, it might do well.

A few notes:

The awnings don't shield diners on the outside wall from the setting evening sun. The manager assured me they were going to address that with some curtains or something; good thing I had my sunglasses.

There were a lot of young families there when we were; they ran out of crayons (our friends' 4-yo got two crayons). I don't think they were anticipating this demographic for early Saturday evening, but if they are willing to be flexible (get more crayons, scribble paper maybe) they could attract a loyal early dining crowd.

I agree with avacon, the space looked really nice. My one complaint is that there's nothing to baffle the sound. It wasn't as cacophonous as Mr. Crepe can be (ie deafening), but I was a bit surprised that no fabric or acoustic tile was used at all.
