I'm getting kind of tired of having a barren living room so i'd like to fill it with comfy couches. I'm absolutely paranoid of bed bugs so I'd really prefer not to craiglist anything upholstered (although we'll buying as much of the rest of the stuff used) We checked out ikea but in the sub-500 price range for fullsized sofas there was nothing remotely comfortable. Bob's discount couldn't be further from the name.

I'm from PA and we have legions of factory direct/cheap furniture chains down there (The Dump, unclaimed freight, etc.) but up here...not so much? Anytime I search for factory direct or wholesale furniture near here I get the sketchiest websites. I'm willing to do southern NH if there's really nothing in MA as long as there's a place willing to deliver to Somerville for a somewhat reasonable rate. Any recs?

You have many other options. One is Jennifer Convertibles in Porter Square. http://www.jenniferfurniture.com/

Another is Affordable Furniture to Go near Ikea in Stoughton.

bob's discount furniture (http://www.mybobs.com/) is pretty reasonable.

also, some of the larger building 19 (http://www.building19.com/) stores have furniture (burlington and framingham both had furniture last i remember)

also, Jordan's Furniture (http://jordans.com/en/FFO.aspx) has some outlet locations

seconded building 19. sometimes they get in big shipments, sometimes they have less. Burlington Building 19 has quite a bit, and is similar to Unclaimed Freight down near Philly

City Schemes has an outlet on Kent St in Somerville. I doubt it will be cheap, though, and I don't think they deliver.

What about Eddie's Furniture in Somerville (http://www.yelp.com/biz/eddies-furniture-somerville)? I have never been there, but the yelp reviews are mostly good and they seem to deliver.

Upholstered furniture is never cheap - Ikea is probably the cheapest and I hear that their upholstered stuff is not so great.

We got our sofa at Boston Interiors in Brookline (or several other places in the area.) It wasn't cheap but it was on the lower end of the furniture price spectrum for decent stuff. And I liked their fairly low-key, relatively helpful sales style. They also have an outlet in Hanover.

The other place worth checking is the "fourth floor" at the Crate and Barrel place on Mass Ave. It may be gone since they consolidated their two stores, but it used to be an outlet of sorts, with slightly better prices. It was seriously on the top floor of the building, not well advertised.

the fourth floor at the aforementioned Crate & Barrel still exists.

If you go out to Gardner (50 miles west off Route 2) you can sometimes find some good prices. Factory Co-Op and Rome Furniture are two good stores.

I've had good luck finding comfy, new $200 couches at places like NFO on Ferry St in Malden Center.

There's a fairly newly opened used furniture store halfway between Harvard and Porter on the Cambridge Common side of the street. He had an amazing sofa for exactly $500 that he had reupholstered. It was a beautifully piece. His reupholstering prices are pretty darn low, so you might be able to tell him the kind of thing you are looking for and your price range and he would be able to make you something.

Metamorphosis. It's part of the same family as Eddie's and Sunshine Lucy's, all of them stocking slightly different selections of funky new & used & reconditioned stuff.

And of course there's Bernie & Phyl's, Bob's, and their ilk.

Bonus tip: you can rent a pickup truck or van for a day for less than the cost of delivery.

I ordered a couch from Bernie and Phyl's. It was reasonably priced (but not super cheap after the add-ons I chose -- extra-firm cushion foam and upgrading the length), and I've been happy with it.

Wal-Mart, I got my TV stand from there for like $20.. Granted it's not exactly fine mahogany but it is very functional. The closest one I'm aware of, oddly, is in reading. Not sure why Target has like 10 of them inside 128 and walmart has 0.

you can kill bed bugs with a clothes steamer if you go over the entire thing with it.

I did this with luggage, sneakers and a winter coat after a bad hotel experience and my Dr. told me that trick.

Cardi's is a chain on the south shore & RI if you get down that way. They do deliver to Boston. Got a sofa there that I'm quite happy with.

Circle Furniture has an outlet store on Concord Ave near Huron Village with a lot of leather furniture.

I'll also give a thumbs up to Eddie's, Sunshine Lucy's, & Metamorphosis. The selection changes frequently, so stop in often.

Have the places in Gardener started carrying anything but very traditional designs? My taste tends toward contemporary and I wasn't too impressed with their selection--though it was a few years ago.

Ashley Furniture (it's in southern NH) has a pretty wide range of prices, so you can find stuff there the $300-400 range (I think my couch was $350). They also have pretty good finance deals (I think I got like 18 months no interest)

Walmart. Target. Kmart. Costco. Sams Club. Used furniture is good too.
