I've currently got T-Mobile on my cell phone, and most of Davis Square is a black hole for me. I get almost no service along Elm street, and none at all inside Redbone's or Diesel.

Anybody got suggestions for a carrier with better coverage in the area?

That's weird...I have T-Mobile as well, live right in the square and never have problems with reception, except in the basement of the Goodwill.

T-Mobile doesn't have any analog network - or, rather, no GSM phones are dual-mode GSM/AMPS, so T-Mobile, Cingular, and AT&T don't have any fallback to analog networks, while Verizon and Sprint, using CDMA phones, do have some dual-mode CDMA/AMPS phones that can do analog fallback.

I find Sprint PCS to be excellent for this area.

ditto. I never used to get reception on my Sprint phone in Diesel at all, and about a year ago it miraculously started working.

i'm on ATT digital's network (i don't think they've actually merged the network with cingular) and i generally don't get very good coverage in the back of diesel. not sure about redbones. most of the davis area is pretty good, though.

i have no idea what (if anything) will happen when they merge the networks, though.

Which is interesting, because until a year ago, while I still had AT&T coverage, I had perfect service in the back of Diesel, and now that I have t-mobile, I don't anymore. But that's the only spot I know of where it's really bad for me.

Ive had Verizon for years (and years, and years) and ive found they have the best coverage BY FAR.. the only place I cant get service is, ironically, in the food court of the galleria mall, right next to the verizon booth :)

Agreed - verizon gets great coverage in the square - and pretty much anywhere I've been in the Boston metro area.

Another T-mobler here, and never had a problem in Davis Sq. (altho I haven't seen the inside of Redbones in a while now). I hated Sprint and couldn't get reception inside my own house.

Verizon is excellent here.

another vote for Verizon, very solid reception.

Yup. Verizon all the way. Not only do I get excellent reception around here (sometimes even in T stations!), but when I go out to The Middle of Nowhere, I am often the only one with reception.

Sprint PCS is, unfortunately, the best that I've found for coverage across the States. Them and NEXTEL. Since their merging, that should be about it.

i had verizon for two years and had no trouble anywhere in davis or the boston area in general. then i switched to tmobile last year, and now my reception is noticably worse. i think i'm going back to verizon as soon as my tmobile contract is up.
