As some of you have already heard, I have decided not  to renew the lease for our second store, Your Move Games (located in Davis Square, Somerville, MA).  As a result, the store's last day will be Saturday, June 26th 2010.  The sad fact is that the store had been losing money for quite some time even before we bought it last July. In spite of all the time and money sunk into the store over the past year, we have not been able to hit break even, and Pandemonium simply doesn't have the resources to keep Your Move afloat.

The silver lining of this situation is that we will be able to focus all of our efforts and resources on improving Pandemonium (our store in Cambridge MA) in every way over the next few months.  We will be consolidating the staffs, fixtures, inventories and events of both stores at Pandemonium.  No we won't be able to fit everything, but we will able to get most everything, I think.  We will be rearranging Pandemonium's downstairs area to make more room for a larger roster of events and a more diverse inventory of games.  Book lovers will be pleased to know that with a larger staff, my attention will be freed up to focus on improving Pandemonium's book selection and literary events, both of which have suffered over the last year.

All members of Your Move Games will have their accounts moved over to Pandemonium, including all credits and Frequent Buyer points.  People who have accounts at both stores will simply have their credit and points from Your Move Games added to their Pandemonium membership.  As mentioned above, we will be moving most of the contents of Your Move Games to Pandemonium, so we will not be having a closeout sale at Your Move Games.  With any luck, we will be announcing the enhanced schedule of events at Pandemonium over the next couple of weeks and will hopefully be able to kick them off after the Fourth of July weekend.

I have created a topic in the General Discussion area of the forum on Pandemonium's website:

I will be checking it daily and will be happy to answer any questions.  I welcome any constructive feedback.  Trolls will be banished.

It's unfortunate that you couldn't figure out a way to change the store into something different and more needed in the community, because it's a great location and already has so much invested in it. I bet if you'd asked around the community for help, people would have popped up out of the woodwork to brainstorm and maybe even come in as a consultant to reorganize the place so that it was seen as highly valuable. Because we are a community of creatives/geeks, and there's definitely a great opportunity to tap into us as both problem solvers and customers.

A lot of local folks pitched in to help when Pandemonium renovated YMG, building new shelving, cleaning, painting, etc. The space was spruced up, reorganized, and rebuilt into a very welcoming and functional space for the local gaming community. Unfortunately as Tyler says, it wasn't enough to make the store profitable, since it'd already been in a money-losing situation.

The Davis Square LJ was used liberally to reach out to the local creative/geek community, and they responded.

Exactly my point. If we'd been tapped to help find a way to turn the store into something that we'd all really want to patronize regularly, we might very well have not just saved the business, but also created something new and valuable for the community. There are so many really cool things that I'm sure we could do within the frame of sc-fi, fantasy, storytelling and games that would make a real difference in the world, and Your Move Games could have been the start of something amazing...

Any ideas you might have toward really cool things that can be done in those fields will be quite valuable towards Pandemonium, I'm sure, so feel free to post some thoughts.
