Hey everyone! As a followup to my last post, I finally found an apartment in Davis Sq. and moved in yesterday, so hello! If any of you are looking to get rid of furniture, or know of garage sales coming up, let me know :) I have zero furniture so I'm definitely in the market for some fun (and cheap!) pieces!

Welcome to Davis Square! I hope lots of folks will give you good tips.

If you end up needing to buy more, I've had good luck finding gently used furniture at these places, especially around now and Sept. 1 when a lot of people are moving and donating their stuff:

1) Goodwill (at 230 Elm Street, right in the Square across from Christo's sub shop)
2) Salvation Army (483 Broadway, up above Magoun Square)
3) University Used Furniture (1267 Broadway, above Teele Square)

thanks!! I just hit goodwill today... couldn't carry any furniture by myself but i scored a lamp base, cute teapot and sconces for $16. Gotta love goodwill.

Today is June 1st, meaning a lot of people are moving. Keep an eye for furniture on the street that people are throwing away. Unfortunately trash pickup was today in the Davis area and the stormy weather might ruin some otherwise reusable stuff.

Just a warning to a newcomer- be VERY careful about second-hand furniture, especially stuff on the street. The Boston area is awash in bedbugs, and if you have never had the joy of dealing with them consider yourself lucky.

In general, never take furniture off the street, IMHO.

ugh, it's really that bad here? In berkeley we had some issues with them but I guess I got lucky. I'm getting a brand new bed, but I can't afford new couches/chairs :(

Does goodwill sprayclean furniture against that kind of stuff?

It can be really bad, and I wouldn't count on Goodwill to do that. It's just good to be really careful with upholstered stuff.

Pets In Need is having a giant yard-sale/fundraiser this Saturday, June 5. Here's their Craig's list posting about it. (http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/pet/1766588676.html) They're a no-kill cat shelter in S'ville, and 100% of their proceeds will go toward their shelter work.

If you have a car (or pick-up) you might want to come early and see if you can't get most of what you need. It's a little outside of Davis... okay, it's on the opposite side of Somerville, but, hey, the city's only 3-miles long. :)

I have an oatmeal and beige 5x8 shag area rug that you can have for free. No stains but could use a cleaning. Also free drop leaf dinette table and two chairs. They're ugly now... I salvaged them to repaint and reupholster into something cool but then lost the motivation. But yeah, free if you can pick them up near Tufts.

If there's anything you like at UU Medford's rummage sale this Saturday, I'd be happy to use my minivan to help you get it home. I saw at least a chest of drawers there, but I don't have their online announcement handy (address is 147 High Street, Medford).
