Hi

Is anyone aware of door to door sales reps from comcast in the area? I thought that you could only get comcast by ordering from the company.  A sales rep came by our house and said she could get us a better deal than the one offered on the comcast website....then she asked for my roommates's social security number.  Is this legit?   thank you...

We had a legitimate Comcast door-to-door salesperson a few months ago, named Leona Swanston. However, she did not ask for a Social Security Number -- that sounds very very wrong.

Sounds like a scam. I'd call Comcast's customer service department to check with them, and if it IS indeed a scam, it'll be good for them to know about it.

A man claiming to be selling Comcast service came to a friend's house when I was babysitting on Wednesday evening. He didn't go into detail, since I don't live there, but he did give me a business card with the Comcast logo. I didn't look at the name on the card, but it did look legitimate.

Just data of recent solicitation.

The door to door people are creepy as can be. A little while ago, at night, some guy came and poked around the back and the side of the house until he determined that we had RCN connections and then knocked on the door to confront us about using a different service and blah, blah, blah, how much he could save us. I informed him that both myself and our duplex neighbor had Comcast and shooed him on his way.

They've supposedly been by my house again recently, but my roommate answered the door while I wasn't home and couldn't give them any of the information they wanted - I hope they weren't asking for my social.

We had someone claiming from Comcast do this at 9:30 on a rainy night a few months back. "I notice you have RCN as your cable provider..."

I stopped him before he could get any further. Since then, I've heard that around here, Comcast has done some legitimate door-to-door canvassing... which has attracted the attention of the scammers.

I really just hope there aren't many people around here who have been giving their SSN out to a random dude who just happened to knock on their door. Please let me cling to that hope. We're smarter than that, right?

Does either the city or the state have any regulation of what hours door-to-door salespeople are allowed to operate?

I haven't seen the Avon Lady or the Fuller Brush Man in a long time .

If he's asking for an SSN, it's almost definitely a scam.

Tell the cops. They need to get an alert out. Clearly someone's been going through your trash, found one with enough info to reconstruct your roommate's identity, and wanted the missing piece.

Twice I've had guys come to my door trying to get me to switch to comcast. They seemed legit, but I wasn't interested in giving them any information anyway. Not having to have comcast is a great perk to living in somerville.

Yeah, I don't believe an SS number is needed for comcast. I don't think they do a credit check or anything.

I also do door to door sales for comcast. And the only time a social number is need is if you get a new phone or are getting a DVR. If you are porting over your phone number from Att or someone else then you dont need to give it. Sometimes they ask for a 4 digit pin or the last 4 digits if your social to log in to your account if you have a problem with your boxes or anything like that.

Also I dont ever collect anyones social. What we do is call in the order in front of the customer and when the time comes for you to give your social we hand the phone over to the customer. And Like I said its only for new phone numbers and DVR. The DVR is their most expensive piece of equipment so they want to make sure its going into the hands of people who are going to pay their bill.

And stop being so rude u people at the door. If you would listen to your dood to door rep first u would probably be very interested. Stop thinking everything is a scam or u will have to hide in ur little box for the rest of your life. If they can save u money why wouldnt u listen?

You dont pay anything at the door the only thing that happens is you get a first bill from comcast and u start paying it. Simple enough right?
