Can you spare a bike?
Jun. 14th, 2010 08:17 amA friend asked me to forward the following to my networks....and after making sure she doesn't mind having her email address posted, I figure this comm counts :)
Hello from Groundwork Somerville where we are in the throes of preparing for our 4th summer employing high school youth in a green jobs training program - the Green Team. We work on a variety of local projects including compost pickup, land-use planning, schoolyard gardening throughout Somerville and travel exclusively by bike to our work sites. We have a small fleet of bikes which we loan out to our youth during their time in our program and are looking to acquire a few more for our summer program beginning June 29th.
The team is short on both bikes and bike locks. We're hoping to procure some more bikes in "ready to ride" condition in order to complete the small fleet of bikes which we loan out (at no charge) to our youth during their time in our program.
We are looking for direct donations of used but functional bikes. If you have a bike sitting around in your garage or basement or a lock that you don't use which you'd like to donate, please let me know. It would be a much appreciated way to support bike-powered youth programs and community building. Spread the word if you think your friends might have neglected bikes in decent condition, sitting around, waiting to serve the community!
In exchange for your donation, you will receive a personal thank you and receipt with the estimated value of your donation for tax purposes. As Groundwork Somerville is a registered 501(c)3 organization, your contribution would be fully tax-deductible.
Please be in touch by phone, 617-628-9988, or email, maura [at] groundworksomerville[dot] org, with any questions or to arrange a drop-off/pickup of your donation. I look forward to speaking with you.
Best,
Maura
