There is a handwritten sign on the door of Spün that says they are closed this weekend for remodeling, but will reopen as a "bistro" serving sandwiches and paninis in addition to frozen yogurt.

Personally, I'm glad... They're right down the street from me, and I want to support them, but I don't like frozen yogurt. I like sandwiches, though!

isn't this the same place that everyone would complain was never open, etc, and just recently they finally settled on regular hours? at this rate this place needs its own tag, this is just getting funny!

We have a tag for "closed businesses" -- maybe we can do a "semi-closed businesses" tag for places like Spun and the bowling alley in Ball Square.

You could call it "Sorry, We're Open"

I have to ask if this place is for real? How do they stay in business?

The rent there cannot be cheap.

Maybe it's just another excuse to shut down for a while.

That makes sense since it is probably hard to do a lot of business when you only sell frozen yogurt. It is funny though since this places opens/closes more than the little place in Teele Sq that constantly gets a new owner.

Yeah, you gotta give 'em points for realizing that maybe they need to expand their menu a bit for more regular business.

Berry Line or however it's spelled in Harvard Square seems to do decent yogurt-only business despite being tucked away in a little corner opposite Club Oberon, but on the other hand that part of Harvard is not quite as remote as Powderhouse.

Berryline has another location on Mass. Ave. across from Lesley University, about halfway from Harvard to Porter.

Why do you want to support them? If they were right down the street from me, I would hope they would leave and be replaced by some people who were actually professional about running a business.

Seconded. Why haven't they lost their lease by now?

I tried to go there last week and after walking a little over a mile to do so the door is locked: "Back in ten minutes".

So desperate at that point for frozen yogurt, I wait and eventually the owner gets there with a bag of sugar and other items to last him through the day. He explained that they were out of original and only serving honeydew. I tried it but avoided the toppings bugs were ALL over them (awful!) and then had an interesting conversation with him. Luck has not been on their side, but planning has played into it as well. They have definitely been low-balling their orders from suppliers so when they do get busy, they run out of things. At the time, his partner was out picking up supplies in a borrowed car so they could make original for the weekend.

Seriously? Some planning goes a long way and although I wished him well, it's hard to believe all the drama that is going into this place. He also was not aware of all the chit-chat going on here about the business but since I tipped him off, he may check it out. *hi*

As I've commented here before, I'm a former customer who has no plans of going back for a long time. I'm really afraid that, considering everything else about this place, they don't properly clean their yogurt machines. At this point, I think their best move would be to sell the business or at least change its name so people think they did!

Perhaps you should (anonymously) tip off the city's health department?

I have no proof that the yogurt machines are not perfectly clean and don't know of anybody who has gotten sick. I'm just being cautious for the health of my family until the store has changed enough to prove themselves to me. Those who have witnessed lots of bugs COULD report that, although it is tough to deal with fruit flies this time of the year . . .

Sorry, I thought you were one of the people who had seen the infestation.

Whether fruit flies are more than just a nuisance, I'm not sure. Too often I find I've brought them home from the farmers' market or Pemberton's.

When they reopen, perhaps they can make the hours on their website agree with the hours on the printed sign outside ?

From http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/somerville/2010/07/p_classcaptiona_classic_photo.html :

But owner Alex Arzoumanov has replaced his manager and is expanding into lunch, offering "select sandwiches that are different than what you can find in the neighborhood," he said, such as fresh mozzarella with basil and olive oil.

Arzoumanov, who said he used to run Big Al's Barbecue in Goshen, N.Y., acknowledged that management in the past was "inconsistent." He works another job himself. But to regain customer trust he now guarantees that the shop will be open seven days a week, noon to 10 p.m. After the renovations are completed, that is: The store was still closed two days after a sign on the door promised it would open.

Is it really still open? I flew past it on a bus this morning and it looked like the entire window was papered over, but I didn't have time to get a better look.

Not open yesterday at 7 pm. Annoying- I had walked there with the kids excited about local froyo.

I'm done with Spun. Why put guaranteed hours on a sign and then not bother to keep them? I won't go afain.
