Heya, Davis denizens! My sister-in-law and her boyfriend are going to be visiting the 8th-12th, scouting the area for a possible move here, and are looking for recommendations of fun stuff to do during that time. We'll give them a few ideas but fundamentally we are parents of a toddler and have no life, so you probably have way more ideas than we do. How do you all have fun and meet people around here? Anything special going on July 8-12? They'll be staying with us near Davis but they'll have a car, so location is flexible. Thanks for your ideas.

What sort of things do they like? Where are they coming from?

Talk to [livejournal.com profile] cos about local music.

What style of music? Club Passim and Johnny D's have live music nearly every night.

Saturday night July 10th Booty Vortex is playing Johnny D's. They're a fabulous disco funk band; the dance floor is always packed but fun.

If that's not their kind of music, you might check the calendar at Club Passim.

You might also check this list of unusual Boston events.

The obvious Tourist traps: USS Constitution, Children's Museum, MFA, MoSci, Harvard Natural History, Walk of Shame the history trails downtown, the Haymarket, Commons, Garden's, Christian Science museum, Harvard Square, Davis Square, Aquarium, etc.

Also the less common traps: given it is summer, the Harbor Islands, the Cape (on a week day!), also the Museum of Industry in Waltham, Car Museum in brookline, MIT museum, etc.

Places to meet people? Uh. What do they do for fun?

Stay away from the Tuesday night Pub Quiz at PJ Ryan's, it's rigged.

The same team that wins every week is comprised of one employee of the bar and at least two personal friends of the quizmaster. Also the questions seem tailored to their particular areas of expertise.

The team that comes in last place gets a free round of shots so I guess I should qualify my original comment by noting that it can still be fun if you don't mind not winning.

marphod has already hit in a number of excellent options. Given the season, I would also add Minute Man National Park in Lexington and Concord, and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln. (That's one long, full day right there.)

Also, a day-trip to Provincetown on the high-speed ferry is fun and cooling. Rent bikes, swim off Race Point, hit galleries and restaurants.

the Fells

If they like to hike and want to see what's a 15-minute ride away they can park at the picnic area at Bellevue Pond (off-peak recreation times are preferable) and hike in the Fells.

Info at the Friends of the Fells site, and detailed maps are available around town for not much.
