Free outdoor contra dance 7/5, folk dance POSTPONED to 7/11

Two free local dance events:

Informal outdoor contra dance in Davis Square
Monday July 5, 7:30 - 9 pm
Music: The Forks of Nature (Jon Cannon, Jonah Sidman, Kirsten Lamb, Rowan Caplan), Audrey Knuth, Alistair Hayden, (and you?)
Calling: Jeff Kaufman, (and you?)
Anyone is welcome to play, call, or dance.

This is the event which got rained out on June 6th.


SUNDAY JULY 11 (postponed from 7/10 due to rain), 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Balkan folk dancing
Somerville Community Growing Center
22 Vinal Avenue at Summer Street (four blocks from Union Square), Somerville
All dances will be taught -- no experience necessary.
The Folk Arts Center of New England's Balkan village dance features basic instruction by leader Jo Crawford, and music by the local band Skorosmrtnica. Sit-in musicians are welcome. See http://www.facone.org/programs/program/greaterbostonoutdoors.htm .

will there be parts available for contra-unfamiliar musicians, or is it okay to wing it in the correct key?

The contra will probably not have sheet music, but you're welcome to wing it.

The Balkan dance will have sheet music for most tunes.

I'd be interested in hearing how the dancing worked. Sorry I couldn't make it but the idea of impromptu contra dancing is really neat.

It went pretty well. There were two lines going, plus a whole lot of spectators. After the dancing finished, there was an acoustic jam session.
