What are some ways that cyclists can positively engage drivers, gain their respect, and encourage them to use caution when they are sharing the road with cyclists?
It's been so long since I've regularly driven a car that I really have no conception anymore of where a blind spot is. I'd forgotten that it even existed.
behind a large tractor trailor the rule usually is, if you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you. for regular cars, just do a google image search for "blind spot diagram" or similar and it's pretty easy. basically, driving between cars, or at least slightly ahead or behind is much better than right alongside.
