What are some ways that cyclists can positively engage drivers, gain their respect, and encourage them to use caution when they are sharing the road with cyclists?

Also, it sounds like all of the bicyclists on this forum have, on more than a few occasions, driven a car on the same city streets that they bike on.

Since your position is obviously as the driver in this discussion, and so many of your bicycling opponents seem to have done both, I am inclined to ask: Have you ridden a bicycle a significant difference in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville traffic in the last ten years or so?
