I have decided that I would like to start roller skating again, but I lack skates. I'd like to buy an inexpensive pair (used is fine - even preferable). Does anyone here have suggestions?  The closer to Davis the better, but anywhere accessible via public transit would work. Note: I'm looking for roller skates, not roller blades.

California isn't very close to Davis.

I don't think there are stores that would sell used old-school roller skates; eBay or Craigslist are probably the best bet.

I have never seen roller skates in a Goodwill or Savers or similar.

Are new 'old-school' (quad) rollerskates still manufactured and sold, or have rollerblades entirely displaced them?

Doesn't seem like that long ago when Rollerblade was a trademark.

Yes, new quad-type rollerskates are definitely still manufactured, although it's perhaps a bit of a niche industry. If nothing else, they're used for roller derby and there are at least a few online stores catering to the roller derby community that sell them. Also, I think "Rollerblade" still is an enforceable trademark, the generic term is "inline skates."

Thanks. If I type "quad rollerskates" into Google, I get links to Dick's Sporting Goods, Sports Authority, Modell's, and Olympia Sports, all chains found in our local area.

Sports Authority is at Assembly Square, while Modell's and Olympia are almost next door to each other at Fresh Pond. (Dick's is in the general metro Boston area but nowhere near Somerville.)

Besides [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman's suggestion, since you mention used is preferable: I'm pretty sure I've seen them in the thrift stores in Davis proper (Goodwill and/or Buffalo Exchange); it may be worth checking just in case the one pair they have is your size.

But... but... then thesis will be taking over my life...

Actually, knowing me, thesis will not deter me from roller skating.

There is a skate shop on South Charles Street in Boston - just south of the Common. It is really old school and worth checking for quads. Good luck!

You also might consider calling a roller rink, like Chez Vous or Rollerworld, as they cycle through used skates and will occasionally sell some off (I haven't tried this with either of these places, but that's been my experience with other roller rinks and bowling alleys.).

In case you're still looking, a nice pair of roller skates, size 8, were brought in to the Goodwill today. They look like they're in very good condition.
