from an e-mail I just got:

This is Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department with an important public safety message for residents in the Spring Hill area.

Thursday evening, Somerville Police interviewed a woman who reported that she had been assaulted last Monday evening. She said that on September 6th about midnight, she was walking home from the Porter Square MBTA station when she was indecently assaulted. She reported that while walking in the vicinity of Summer Street and Belmont Street, she was approached by a male who was riding a red BMX type bicycle. This subject made an indecent remark to her and she quickly tried to walk away. She was then grabbed by the subject who pulled out what appeared to be a firearm. She was then knocked to the ground and assaulted. The victim was able to scream, causing him to cease his attack and flee the area on his bike.

She described the suspect as a Black male, Early 20's, wearing a White Kangol style golf cap, a striped shirt around his waist and jeans.

Somerville Police have increased patrols in this area and have shared this information with other Police Departments. We want the neighborhood residents, especially women who may be walking in this area, to be especially vigilant. We encourage women to take common sense precautions, be aware of their surroundings and avoid distractions such as headphones and iPods. If you carry a cell phone, keep it in an easily accessible place.

The Somerville Police Department is working jointly with other police agencies to identify and apprehend this suspect as quickly as possible.

If you see anyone who is acting suspicious in this area, especially late in the evening, please do not hesitate to call 911. Thank you.

Thanks, Ron. Is this from a public mailing list? I thought I was on a list to receive things like this, but I haven't seen any in a while, so maybe I need to re-subscribe or something.

It may have to do with the area where you live? They try to send only emails that are relevant to your neighborhood.

I got the email, and I would guess it's because I recently signed up on the city's website in Constituent Services/311 - go to this page: http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=311&page=724 and then use the link on the left for "Connect-CTY Notifications".

There isn't much crime around here. But I guess, criminals can bike around. Should not be too difficult to catch this one.

Just wanted to point out that this report is creepily similar to one from a few months ago: http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/2292597.html

Exactly the same intersection, same story (walking home from Porter Sq T), different suspect descriptions, though.
