Surely this question has been addressed here, but I can't find it. What is the correct way to dispose of a monitor? I know they won't take it if I put it out on the curb. That's how the monitor before this one ended up in the garage for 5 years (and counting).

Actually, this one works perfectly well, so if anyone wants it, it's all yours. But it's the size and weight of a dog carrier filled with bricks, so I'm guessing no one will. I just don't know the drill for scrapping it. Thanks!

You can put it on the curb on trash day, but you have to call 311 at least one day before and let them know you're leaving it there.

Do you know if those items, once placed outside with the trash, are recycled or appropriately disposed of by the city? I'd hate for my very-toxic-monitor to end up in a landfill.

I was told that it was a "special recycling truck". If they were just going to throw it in the landfill, wouldn't they get it with the regular trash?

I'm assuming it gets recycled but I don't actually know, having never used this service. Call 311 or DPW and ask.

The reason for the service is because state law prohibits putting monitors in landfills. So presumably the city is disposing them appropriately.

You can take it to most Best Buy stores. They charge you $10, but then they give you a $10 gift card.

Call the local public schools first! They're always looking for freebies.

sounds like you've got a plan now, but for reference on this thread I will also chime in that according to the Staples website, Staples takes monitors for $10 (and free if it's Dell.) They also accept small peripherals like keyboards and mice, at no charge.
