Halloween falls on a Sunday this year.  Will trick-or-treating happen on Sunday evening, or does it happen on the Saturday before?

Thanks if anyone has info.

I don't see why it would ever occur on a date other than Halloween, regardless of what day of the week it is.

See also last year's post.

Some school departments (Arlington's, for instance) always have November 1st off. I think they use it for teacher meetings.

In Somerville, the public schools are always closed on Election Day, which happens to be Nov 2 this year. [/irrelevant]

Do you think these schools are Catholic schools and they are taking off for All Saints' Day? Mine never did, but I didn't go to grade school in Massachusetts and this state loves to take off for holidays. Not that I'm complaining; just saying.

No, this is the public school department. I think the reasoning is that they need to have a day for teachers' meetings sometime, and the might as well have it on a day when the kids have been out trick-or-treating the night before.

Some cities and towns organize "official" trick-or-treating days and hours that do not necessarily fall on Hallowe’en. Go figure.

Yeah, and that always seemed stange to me. Holidays, especially ones with religious origins, happen when they happen. Rescheduling them is like saying Thursday will occur on Tuesday this week.

Yup! It's dumb as hell, but some people can't leave well enough alone.

You may be old enough to remember when Columbus Day was always October 12, Washington's Birthday was always February 22, Memorial Day was always May 30, and Patriots Day (and the Marathon) was always April 19.

"like saying Thursday will occur on Tuesday this week."

Brandeis did that all the time when I was in college! And I bet they still do.

Most often, they rescheduled Mondays.

I'm going to say the same thing I said last year--in the town where I grew up, Hallowe'en was always a movable feast, depending on what day the Board of Selectmen and Police Department thought would be most convenient.

Thank heaven Somerville doesn't do that, and has Hallowe'en on Hallowe'en!

I was waiting for this year's to show up, but I hoped it wouldn't. :)

There is a business-district trick-or-treat in Medford every year, which is scheduled for an afternoon a few days before Halloween. I guess it's to promote the businesses and provide a "safer" experience for little kids than going to strangers' houses at night. (A proven danger, right? Hmpf.) A little Googling shows that Lexington does it too. I couldn't find the day/time for this year's event in Medford.

I decided to look a little further, and Medford's "Business Trick or Treat" is Oct. 29. They don't say what time, but I think it's something like 3-5 or 4-6. http://www.medfordchamberma.com/events.html

Somerville has a bunch of Halloween events before Halloween:

Sunday, October 24
There’s this, which includes trick-or-treating:
SomerStreets (http://www.somervillema.gov/cos_content/documents/OctoberSomerstreetsPoster1.pdf)

Friday, October 29
Haunted House 1 at the Recreation Bldg., 19 Walnut Street, 6:00 to 9:00 P.M.

Halloween Howl family friendly concert, Davis Square, 6 to 10 P.M.

Friday and Saturday, October 29 and 30
SPD Haunted House
haunted house 2 (http://www.somervillema.gov/spd/)

There’s also always a parade along the bike path from Davis Square to Lexington Park. I forget the day and time for that.

However, I think there are no official events on October 31. Everyone is free to trick-or-treat on their own.

Where did you find the information about the first Haunted House and the concert? Is the concert outdoors?

There will also be a "Ghosts of Somerville" event in Milk Row Cemetery (next to Market Basket), Sunday 10/24 from 2 to 4 pm.

The stroll from Davis Square to Lexington Park is on 10/31. It starts at noon in Statue Park.
