Artisan's Asylum's November class schedule has been posted on Eventbrite.

I am personally quite excited about Urban Poultry 101, on November 8, because CHICKENS! In the city!! This is a 2 hour presentation about how to keep poultry in the city (it is legal in Somerville!). The presenter will be bringing in some of her flock, too.

We also have a couple more Halloween-themed offerings later this month:

Spirits with Spirits, Wednesday, Oct. 27. Join us for an evening of regional ghost stories paired with regional food and spirits. Featuring some very, very rare spirits!

The Monster Bash, Saturday, Oct. 30. Music! Dancing to "Thriller" and other great tunes! Costumes and prizes! It's not a class, it's a party! Create wearable work of art and join us for a great time.

Our craft classes for November:

Metal Fabrication:

Introduction to TIG Welding, Thursdays and Fridays. Come learn how to TIG weld with Skunk. TIG welding is a precise type of welding generally used to make space frames and small pieces.

Metalworking for Women, Sundays. Our popular all-women class returns. Learn how to make sculptural metal pieces with metalworking and welding techniques.

Forming Sheet Metal, Saturdays. Come learn how to bend sheet metal to your will. Or shrink, stretch, bump, press form, bead, and fold it.

Manual Precision Machining, Fridays. Get an introduction to the lathe and mill and learn how to make your own precise metal parts.

Textiles:

Latex Clothing Workshop Series, Sundays. Three separate workshops on making simple latex clothing - sign up for all three for a discount.

Introduction to Sewing, Mondays. Come learn how your sewing machine works and how to use it to create basic stitches.

Woodworking:

Intro to Woodworking: Small Projects, Wednesdays. Get introduced to woodworking tools, joinery techniques, and finishing. Plans for small projects like boxes and jewelry racks will be available, but feel free to bring your own designs!

Building the Asylum (Intro to Woodworking), Tuesdays. Learn how to make wooden structures by helping build Artisan's Asylum infrastructure! Alternatively, just volunteer - we could always use more help. This is fun and social class, and a great way to meet people.

Papercrafts:

Bookbinding for Beginners, Saturdays. Learn how to make your own beautiful books with simple materials. Learn three different bookbinding techniques and take home three unique books!

Making Marbled Paper, Wednesday, Nov. 17. In this single-session workshop, you will learn how to use water-based techniques to make gorgeous marbled paper.

Paper Mould Making and Casting, Mondays. Did you know you can use paper pulp to make detailed reliefs and castings? This class will teach you how to make moulds and create cast paper reliefs and sculptures.

Miscellaneous:

Spatial Sculptural Design through Tyvek Tents, Saturdays. Want to learn how to make fabric structures? We will explore the use of plastic EMT tubing and Tyvek fabric to make tents and attempt a tent with passive solar panels that will raise its interior temperature.

Note that, because of Thanksgiving, most of our multi-week classes will be taught over 3 longer sessions instead of 4 shorter ones.

I also want to point out that we have a section on our wiki dedicated to listing local resources (and some on online) for finding materials, like foam and wood and plastic and gears and whatever.

We have another section for listing other local organizations doing similar things, or things that you might be interested in if you are interested in what we do.

Check it out - if you have something you'd like to add, please do! It is a wiki, that is what it is for.

Although it's a wiki, I don't see a button or link that I can use to edit it. I suggest adding Parts and Crafts to the Related Organizations page. They sound very similar to you.

Done and done. Is Willoughby and Baltic still active? Their website hasn't been updated since March so I wasn't sure.

I'm waiting for it to be more-legal in Somerville than it is now. I hear the Planning Board is working on a policy that spells out details (eg number of chickens and what chicken owners ought to do with them to be responsible chicken neighbors), with the understanding that it's already legal-by-not-being-illegal and no legal changes are needed to make up the policy. But I haven't heard anything about the policy being enacted. I'm still hoping to get a coop together in the spring.
