Run Club?

So, on my run tonight, I ran the opposite direction of what seemed like about 20-30 other runners around Magoun Square. Can anyone shed a little light on this? They appeared to all be together.

If you were one of them, hello! I was the dude in the Vibrams and the Cardinals shirt.

http://www.srr.org/ is the official website for the Somerville Road Runners

don't know if the group you saw was them or not... but they are known in the area

I did not know that Somerville had two separate running clubs. Is there any significant difference between them?

I don't know; I'm completely uninvolved. I've heard rumors that one branched from the other.

Most likely it was this run: http://www.srr.org/events/khourys/ . They start and end in East Somerville.

The Somerville Striders do a Thursday night 5k starting at the Old Magoun Saloon. That's probably who you saw.

Yeah, this one. I can't believe there were six comments from people not providing the right answer first. :)

The Striders are an excellent group and put on, among other things, the upcoming party-on-feet that is the Jingle Bell Run. I had an elaborate group costume idea, but the wedding and pregnancy things more or less derailed my running...

Also, Olde Magoun's is generally awesome.

second the thumbs up for the saloon. I still have a groupon I need to use before the frigid icelands prevent venturing that far ;)

Hi -- is there any significant difference between the two local running clubs? I didn't even know we had two different ones until I read these comments.

I assume there are differences at some level, but from my pov as someone who periodically runs or volunteers at various races but it's involved in the organizations any more deeply than that, I don't know what they are.

I vaguely recall hearing that someone was mad at someone else for an attitude they didn't like so they started another club, but I have no idea what the details are.

I have heard the same rumor, that there was a disagreement about the philosophy/purpose of the group, and that the Striders broke off from the Road Runners (I think this is supported by the claim that the Road Runners is Somerville's oldest running club). This was from a member of the Road Runners. I don't know anything more.

Not sure why it's the "right" answer. Somerville road runners to a Thursday night run too, starting from Casey's bar, running on Broadway through Magoun and eventually looping back through again via Lowell to Magoun.

I'm not affiliated with either group, but I live in the area and SRR seems more visible/bigger.

Because I assumed, very possibly incorrectly, that he said them at Ole Magoun's. Also forgot that the SRR run goes along Medford St, too. Oops. :]

Anyway, it still seems the most likely if you're in Magoun Sq, since it starts and ends there, there's a lot more opportunity for seeing the SSAC folks there then the SRR. I live a couple of blocks away and I see them every week, anyway, including earlier this evening.

I have no personal issues with either group and have been a member of both. I only lean towards the SSAC runs because they're more conveniently located for me and because, as noted, I hate the Khoury's route. I am quite curious about the psychodrama if anyone knows the story, though.

OB: the first rule of run club is ... you don't talk about the other run club?
