Thai Kitchen (aka Thai and Mandarin Kitchen, aka Pho House), on Mass. Ave. near Dover Street in North Cambridge, is no more. A note on the door from the owners, dated yesterday, says that they have closed the restaurant "for personal reasons" after eight years.

I enjoyed many meals here, and I'll miss it, especially since it was the closest restaurant of any kind to my apartment building, I hope another ethnic eatery will move in to replace it.

Jinkies. So much for affordable and filling food without grease down the street.

Actually, some friends of mine and I tried to go there last Tuesday (9 days ago), and when we found them closed, we went to the Greek Corner (this week we called first and assumed it was probably closed because we got no answer). I like Greek Corner, but I will miss Thai Kitchen; it was hard to beat for price and quality in my book--$7.50 for a dinner special that included soup, appetizer, and sometimes ice cream as a compliment along with the main course is quite a deal.

i also was wondering the same thing. They are my favorite chinese in the area and i have been craving them something fierce. I agree, I do see workers doing work, so that is hopeful....

If you have a Restaurant.com certificate for Pho House, as I do (and tried to use Sunday night but found them closed), you may be interested in this from the Restaurant.com web site:

If the restaurant is permanently closed or does not accept your Restaurant Gift Certificate, please contact Customer Service at info@restaurant.com (include your Restaurant Gift Certificate number or code) or call us at 1-800-979-8985 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Central Standard Time and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Our Customer Service department will exchange your unused Restaurant Gift Certificate for equivalent credit to Restaurant.com in the form of a Restaurant.com Gift Certificate. You can then use your Restaurant.com Gift Certificate to choose another Restaurant Gift Certificate or Merchant Certificate from Restaurant.com.

All restaurants are "ethnic". You're just more familiar with some ethnicities than others.

I'm not sure if this is really true. Some food is regional or subcultural. For example, California Cuisine or Asian Fusion. Food that is typical of the U.S. or some region thereof is usually not described as ethnic, because American (or Californian or Yuppie or Hipster, etc.) is not usually considered an ethnicity.

Some Southerners, usually of Scots-Irish descent, will describe their ancestry as American. See this map, for example:

Sad. I loved that place. Especially the waitress with the buzz cut and hopelessly out-of-date glasses.

I drove by too quickly to get a good look but I believe that I saw an "Opening Soon" banner of this storefront saying that a new Thai place would be opening there.

Damn...I ate hear all the time...couldnt beat the specials anywhere around...

They were first Thai Kitchen, Then Thai & Mandarin Kitchen, then Pho House...all the same owner/chef. Is it possible they are just changing their name and focus again or is there truly new owners?

At least it will be a Thai restaurant.
