Fried Food

I have a friend coming into town who has requested "fried food" tomorrow night.

This is a very vague challenge, and I am at a loss.

Anyone have any good ideas this side of the river?

I am trying to avoid Redbones because she's been living in Tennessee for like seven years, so I'm thinking she's had her fill of bbq.

Thank you!

And their Fish and Chips are pretty good too. Though I personally somewhat prefer those at the Burren.

Might not be atmospheric enough, but Kelly's in Evertt has fried seafood.

Try the Kelly's at Revere Beach, then. (For additional atmosphere, go at low tide)

Latkes? Though I'm not sure what restaurant serves them. Maybe S&S in Inman Square, or Zaftig's in Coolidge Corner?

(I'm guessing your friend is Jewish and wants something fried because it's Chanukah.)

Ah. Take her to Slade's in Roxbury. Or to Bob the Chef if you are uncomfortable being the only white person in the room.

ETA: I suppose I'm making an assumption here based on all the white people in your userpics.

Oh, this side of the river, nevermind. It does not get any more the-other-side-of-the-river than Roxbury.

But if you want a black (specifically, Haitian) restaurant on this side of the river, see the recommendation below for Highland Cuisine.

Sadly, Bob the Chef (later renamed Bob's Southern Bistro) closed a couple years ago.

Well, then she's obviously trying to diversify her diet to include the four major food groups: Candy, Fried, Salted, and Booze. That being said, Coast Cafe in Cambridge is awesomely fried, but if she's from the South she may be real picky about her fried chicken. I do love me some fried pickles at Cambridge Common, and you can't go wrong with any of their fried American food.

I always thought they were: fat, salt, sugar, cholesterol, and that stuff they put in Twinkies...

S&S and Zaftigs both have latkes, as does Rubin's Deli outside Coolidge Corner (regular latkes year-round, and 5 varieties for Hannukah: http://www.rubinskosher.com/specials/hanukah2010.htm ).

There's lots of tasty fried indian foods. Cheese pakoras are a personal favorite. Samosas and poori are fried. Gulab jamun, a ridiculously sweet dessert, is also fried (and then soaked in syrup)...

This sounds like the best suggestion yet, as I suspect Indian food is fairly unusual in Tennessee.

Incorrect. Its wildly popular, at least in the larger cities.

If you're driving, consider Moulton's Seafood (http://www.yelp.com/biz/moultons-seafood-restaurant-medford) in Medford.

Cambridge Common has good fried food. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cambridge-common-cambridge) And I thought their beer selection was fantastic (and not terribly expensive).

Also, this girl must be classy as hell if she's been living in Tennessee. She's good people. I applaud this friendship.

The Bowling alley off of route 2 (walking distance from Alewife) has a wide selection of the kind of fried foods you'd want with bowling and beer. Also, I second Cambridge Common's (and Tavern in the Square's) fried pickles. They're spears instead of chips, which gives a higher cucumber:batter ratio, but I think that's delicious.

The bowling alley is called Lanes & Games.

The Creole restaurant on Highland near McGrath has excellent fried goat, and it's pretty inexpensive. I haven't tried any of their other food; I just was so curious after biking past and smelling what smelled like Chex Mix coming from there day after day, so I stopped in for a snack one day after work. Have to go again sometime.

It is called Highland Cuisine -- not to be confused with better-known Highland Kitchen a half mile further west.

probably also

I know it's probably further than you're asking, and not really the least bit exotic, but when I hear "fried food," I think "Kelly's Roast Beef." Clams or fish.

Fried seafood from Jimbo's (http://www.jimbosroastbeef.com/) in Union Square! Delicious!

But the page you linked to doesn't list a Union Square location.

It's on Bow Street

That's OK -- this thread will still be useful to future readers. I like Grendel's too. Did she and you have any fried food there?
