Hello,

On 12/29/10 at approximately 6pm, a medium sized, reddish/brown dog was found tied to a pole on College Ave. The dog allegedly had a note attached to it and a bag of dog food nearby. The note indicated that the dog was homeless.

Somerville Animal Control is seeking any infomation on who left the dog tied to the pole and how long it was there. Any information regarding this incident would be very helpful.

Please contact Somerville Animal Control at 617-625-6600 ext 2190
or email aterrio at somervillema dot gov.

Thank you!

I am glad that its okay. This is as bad as woman who leave babies in alleys even though there are safe places. I just dont get why someone would do that when you could bring it to a shelter.

People can't afford the fees. Apparently two years ago there was a huge problem with purebred dogs coming in to shelters because people would dump them on the side of the road and drive off.

Reading stories like that makes me cling to my dog all the harder.

Oh yes, yes they do definitely take donations, GLADLY.

Here are a couple of quick examples:
Donate to the Animal Rescue Network of New England (http://www.arnne.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=174)
Donate to the Northeast Animal Shelter (https://www.kintera.org/site/c.omLZKiN4LvH/b.2626895/k.E0C/Tax_deductible_donations_to_Northeast_Animal_Shelter_save_homeless_dogs_and_cats_Donate_online/apps/ka/sd/donor.asp?c=omLZKiN4LvH&b=2626895&en=drIJLRMBKeLIIRPGKkJJKROFIfKRJcMMKiJOKYOIJoJWJZNAIkK5G)

Because someone might recognize them and shame them at the shelter. At least this person left the dog in clear public view, not able to wander into traffic, and with food. They were trying.

Posting a photo of the dog may help locate its (former?) owner.

Out of curiosity, what part of College Ave? The "Davis End," the "Tufts End," or the "Middle Part?"

I'll ask the inevitable and long-shot question ...

It's not Marisol (http://www.findmarisol.com/), is it?

I figured. :( Didn't stop me for hoping against hope that this would be the perfect fairy tale ending. :(

I have little to add except that this kind of thing makes me absolutely furious! I used to volunteer at a cat shelter and after awhile I handled the call backs and when I told people we had a surrender fee they'd threaten to abandon the animal if we didn't take them. The final straw was the guy who threatened to drown the cat if we didn't take him/her. We did, of course, but after that I had to stop volunteering because I was just burned out on people. I was also working 3 jobs so something had to give. I also completely flipped out on this guy.

absolutely.

when i was living back in quincy our complex had a lot of feral cats. but one night i went out and there was a cat (couldn't have been more than six months tho i'd say) that was certainly not feral - instead of bolting she came right up and nuzzled me. she didn't have any tags though and we already had two cats & two dogs and i wasn't sure what to do with her.

later i came back, and eventually one of my roommates buzzed which wasn't unusual. he said his hands were full which was pretty typical of us (easier than futzing with keys). well, i'm sure you can guess his hands were full of HER, haha. apparently there was a guy kind of lurking around and my roommate asked if the cat was his, or he might know who it belonged to. the guy was like, oh, it was my mom's but we can't afford her so you can have her. basically he had removed all her identification and left her out there to freeze (it was right before or after xmas, i can't recall). she was dehydrated and a little buggy but otherwise okay. thankfully his fiancee worked as a vet tech so we were able to take her in and fix her up. we no longer live together but she still lives happy as a clam with them and the other cats and now their son.

i worked with rescue for a bit and it's just so awful what people will do - leaving an animal outside seems perfectly fine and reasonable to them, it's so sad, especially in the cold like this.

it was always good to go to a fundraiser or just a get together with other rescue folks to get a break from all the sadness, to know there are some good stories out there too.

life threw me a lot of lemons the past years and i was essentially living out of my car. i had no money to pay any bills, even buy a new pair of shoes, etc and i had to give up my rescue. it was the hardest day of my life but i knew he would be well taken care of. my friends in rescue helped me set up a 'permanent foster' situation where he would be happy and cared for (he's a little bit special needs in that he's mostly blind and has IBS) and i could still visit. they never judged me and helped me make the best of a really painful and hard situation and i'm thankful every day they exist.

Perhaps the owner was also homeless and couldn't afford a surrender fee?

I am glad the dog is safe now.

This was my thought too, and why I asked which section of College Ave the dog was tied to.
