Hello,
On 12/29/10 at approximately 6pm, a medium sized, reddish/brown dog was found tied to a pole on College Ave. The dog allegedly had a note attached to it and a bag of dog food nearby. The note indicated that the dog was homeless.
Somerville Animal Control is seeking any infomation on who left the dog tied to the pole and how long it was there. Any information regarding this incident would be very helpful.
Please contact Somerville Animal Control at 617-625-6600 ext 2190
or email aterrio at somervillema dot gov.
Thank you!

Date: 2010-12-30 08:04 pm (UTC)when i was living back in quincy our complex had a lot of feral cats. but one night i went out and there was a cat (couldn't have been more than six months tho i'd say) that was certainly not feral - instead of bolting she came right up and nuzzled me. she didn't have any tags though and we already had two cats & two dogs and i wasn't sure what to do with her.
later i came back, and eventually one of my roommates buzzed which wasn't unusual. he said his hands were full which was pretty typical of us (easier than futzing with keys). well, i'm sure you can guess his hands were full of HER, haha. apparently there was a guy kind of lurking around and my roommate asked if the cat was his, or he might know who it belonged to. the guy was like, oh, it was my mom's but we can't afford her so you can have her. basically he had removed all her identification and left her out there to freeze (it was right before or after xmas, i can't recall). she was dehydrated and a little buggy but otherwise okay. thankfully his fiancee worked as a vet tech so we were able to take her in and fix her up. we no longer live together but she still lives happy as a clam with them and the other cats and now their son.
i worked with rescue for a bit and it's just so awful what people will do - leaving an animal outside seems perfectly fine and reasonable to them, it's so sad, especially in the cold like this.

Date: 2010-12-30 10:21 pm (UTC)Also, thank you for your previous work in rescue. It is not an easy job and the thing that makes it the hardest is seeing how people treat animals. I've been doing this for 5 years now and no matter how much crappy stuff I see happen to animals, it never ceases to amaze me just how cruel people can be.
On the other hand, I have also seen the very best of people. People who are willing to do just about anything to help rescue an animal. Rescue volunteers who give up what little free time they have to drive a friendly pit bull to a foster home in Western Mass because it is the dog's only chance.
Balance is good in life.

Date: 2010-12-31 12:09 am (UTC)life threw me a lot of lemons the past years and i was essentially living out of my car. i had no money to pay any bills, even buy a new pair of shoes, etc and i had to give up my rescue. it was the hardest day of my life but i knew he would be well taken care of. my friends in rescue helped me set up a 'permanent foster' situation where he would be happy and cared for (he's a little bit special needs in that he's mostly blind and has IBS) and i could still visit. they never judged me and helped me make the best of a really painful and hard situation and i'm thankful every day they exist.
