For the past two nights on Cameron Avenue a very vocal kitty has been coming around my house. It has a collar (perhaps just a flea collar). Animal control is not available until the morning. It seems to be lost and hungry. Has anyone lost a kitty in this area? It's heartbreaking to here this kitty meow all night long. I can't let the kitty in, since I already have one.
Is it possible to leave a blanket plus something waterproof/insulating out for the kitty to snuggle with overnight? Or bring it into the house for the night and feed it but keep it in the bathroom or somewhere enclosed so that the other cat won't get upset and then call animal control in the morning?
I've had cats and I do understand what it's like to be concerned about kitties clashing. But the thought of leaving a hungry kitty out in the cold all night in the middle of frigid temps...my heart is breaking too.
A kitten overnight doesn't actually take much space. Once, we overnighted a small cold cat in a (open) box between the front door and the inner door with a towel to snuggle in. A bathroom would also work, and probably be somewhat easier to clean if there were an accident.
Nature's Miracle (the cat specific kind) is good at removing scents. Spray it where you kept the kitten after Animal Control picks it up and you'll probably avoid problems with your cat after the fact.
We actually just let him in our front hallway. He was hungry for sure as he chowed the whole plate of dry food. We will see how long we can keep him out there, before the neighbors start to complain. He is a very loud meower. Thankfully our cat is deaf, so he can't hear. I just would hate to let him back out into the cold! He is a beautiful cat and very friendly!
Worse comes to worse, I'd follow weegoddess's advice and put a cardboard box with a blanket or towel in it outside for the poor thing. At least it is some shelter from the wind.
Yes, it is gray with yellow eyes. Would anyone be able to give me the information on the signs? I'm at work in Boston and can't get back to Somerville until tonight. I did call Animal Control, just so the kitty would have somewhere warm to be. Please and thank you! I want for this kitty to get home safely!
I feel like I see these kinds of posts constantly in this community. I don't believe that all of these "lost cat" postings could just be animals that have gotten outside by accident... And cats should never be let outside in the first place. Don't let your cat out and it won't get lost. Just sayin'.
