I need to buy construction paper, kids scissors, glue sticks, markers, crayons etc. I tried the Davis Square CVS and didn't have any luck. Ideas? The close the better, but I could do anything accessible via public transit. I know of some art stores in the area, but I really just need cheap stuff for a kids' craft.

Bob Slate in Porter Square, or Staples in Harvard Square?

I know buses go to both Assembly Square shopping plaza (AC Moore and KMart) and Wellington Shopping Plaza (Target and Michaels). Those places are cheap. If you prefer to patronize a local company, Ron's suggestion is the way to go thought they'll be a bit more expensive.

Assembly square also has Christmas tree shop and staples both should have cheap supplies.

Staples in Harvard Square is much easier to reach by public transit, though. Harvard Square also has two Bob Slate stores in case their Porter Square one doesn't have what you want. The Harvard Coop might have some school supplies, too.

Staples at Fresh Pond is a reasonable walk (through Danehy Park) from Davis Square.

You can also take the 88 from Davis to the Somerville Target.

88 or 87 -- take whichever comes first.

Worth noting, the 88 drops off further away than the 87.

I would have thought the CVS and or the Rite Aid would have at least a fair piece of that. Staples is also at Fresh Pond Mall, a bigger store with more options including "teaching supplies." You might call Henry Bear Park and see if they carry such.

Rite Aid definitely has some, if not all.

I think I've bought a bunch of that at the family dollar in Davis. What you can't find would definitely be at Bob Slate for more $, and you can walk from Davis (it's where Beech St hits Mass Ave.) I remember seeing most of it at the Davis Square CVS though - at least a while ago, the stationary supplies were over on the far right wall from when you've just entered the store, kind of near the vitamins.

I definitely got a lot of this stuff at family dollar (the scissors, crayons, markers, glue sticks, and even little plastic cases to hold it all). we got a huge supply of construction paper from Costco, which isn't really public transport accessible, but if you know anyone going that way, might be worth it...

Porter Square's CVS is bigger than ours -- perhaps they still have these items there?

Almost any other CVS would carry that stuff, so that is odd... Walgreens has them. So does Stop & Shop.

Play Time on Broadway in Arlington Center should have most of the crafty stuff you're looking for.

Yes, this is what I was going to recommend but couldn't remember the name! An easy bus ride from Davis.

it was better when pearl was here, but even still, if you're going to travel just going to central might be your best bet. (we needed some supplies for decorating a couple years ago just like you describe and got them all here - between CVS, walgreens, and pearl (but there's also artists supply anyway) we got everything and then some and of course they're all just a hop away from each other.)

I'm so sad that Pearl is gone. : ( Though for school supplies like this, I'd just go to the Dollar Store or Rite Aid. But really? I loved Pearl. [sigh]

Once you've accomplished this, can you tell us all where you shopped, for future reference? Thanks.
