The city prohibits people shoveling snow into the street UNLESS the mean temperature is over 40F. Wunderground says it's 44F, now. If your street is hazardously narrow (or even if it's not), consider going out and scraping back a few snowbanks so that emergency vehicles can more easily get down the street. Hopefully you won't need it from having a show-shoveling-induced heart attack.

ETA: the temp today has ranged from 36F to 44F, but it's unclear if that actually qualifies as a mean temperature of >40F.

It was 36F at 0600. It's slightly over 44F now, giving an average temperature is about 40F. It's not clear over what period of time the "mean temperature" is calculated for a day -- daytime? day to date? dunno.

my iphone weather says it's currently 41, it was 32 this morning, and it's going to drop to the low 20s tonight. well below 40 mean. i also believe the mean is just between today's high and low: 40 and 26.

Actually, the city prohibits people shoveling snow/ice from their property into the street. It seems to be silent on the question of people shoveling snow from one part of the street onto another part of the street.

Actually, what the law says is "No owner, tenant or occupant of land or a building, or any agent thereof, in this city shall cause any snow or ice from said land or building to be placed in any public way" and then gives exceptions.

True. If the snow I'm clearing is a snowbank that is on the street, it's not snow from "said land or building," though. If I scrape an even-side snowbank back 8 or 12 inches and spread the snow out on the nice warm pavement, I'm moving snow that fell on the street from one part of the public street to another.

The city's been doing a great job of clearing the mondo fire-truck-impeding snowbanks from the major streets and squares, but I figure they're not going to get to the smaller streets any time soon.

My whole neighborhood shoveled a bunch of the mountains of snow out into the street today and it is all melted. We get a lot of sun though.
