Getting the Devil Off Your Back: The Lore of Contemplative Hasidism
The literature of early Hasidism was a rich treasure of teachings about prayer, meditation, and the conduct of daily life. This session will examine selected passages from Liqqutim Yeqarim ("Precious Selections"), a collection of teachings attributed to two founders of the Hasidic movement, Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, and Dov Baer, the Maggid (Preacher) of Mezritch. The tolerant and life-affirming spirit of these teachings remains a model of spiritual development remarkably accessible to all seekers.
Joel Rosenberg, a member of the founding generation of Havurat Shalom, is a poet, translator, and scholar in Jewish studies.
* * Friday February 18, 6:30 p.m., Join us for services followed by a potluck, dairy/vegetarian Shabbat dinner. Services at Havurat Shalom are egalitarian, lay-led and usually involve a lot of singing. The potluck is truly pot luck - no arranging of the dishes in advance. The meal is a good time to meet people and we welcome newcomers.
