It's been about 2 months since several of the trees in Seven Hills Park were damaged. I don't know a lot about tree care, but doesn't something need to be done to protect a damaged tree? It would be nice to see the fallen branches cleared, but I'm concerned about the places on the trees where the branches broke.

(Or tell them on Twitter (311Somerville) or Facebook! The city is awesome like that.)

Don't know. I just saw it mentioned in Mayor Joe's column in the Somerville...whichever local paper; I confuse the titles. I don't follow them on Facebook, just Twitter.

That just takes me to the Facebook main page. (Anything after # in a URL is just an anchor point on the page.)

Except that there isn't any way that I can see to write on 311Somerville's wall or even to comment on its posts.

It does look like you can send a message though. That said, it took me a bit of looking to see that I could sent the message, and if it's that much of a pain, it's definitely not one of the easiest contact methods.

Hi there,

Just message us on Facebook on the Somerville311 page and one of us will get back to you with a work order number.

You need to open your Facebook Wall up for people to post directly to it. Very few people use the very obscure Facebook private messaging system.

I bet there are privacy issues with posting freely on the wall.

The messaging system probably sees a lot more use than you'd think. They're also making a big push involving their direct messaging system this year, they want it to basically replace email. Those of us in the email marketing biz are watching this closely.

I can't quite remember the source/details, but for highschool kids, they send far more FB private messages than they do emails. In grad school I shifted much more to FB--it's actually a better system than email for a lot of uses.

Really? I don't see any way to sort the mail, or divide it up into folders. Both pretty elementary needs for a mail system.

I don't know if that's really needed for a social messaging system though (obviously for some ppl, but I don't think it's a universal need outside of work); the search function has always been enough for me, and I rarely use that.

Ron, the private messaging system is not obscure and I use it all the time.

Yes, Ron. I use it all the time, and I'm old! And, those that don't like it can place their 311 requests by phone or the city web page.

In general, unless the damage is prone to rotting or appears infected, the current treatment is to let the tree naturally heal. Although, the sharp edges will often be smoothed.

That being said, Somerville may also be just ignoring it, at least until spring.

Yes, it is often hard to tell the difference between "intentional benign neglect" and just "neglect" but registering one's concern with the city never hurts.
