sacco's has been around since like 1935, which i think is neat. i have to say, i've never really encountered a "bad" bowling alley, although it would be even better if they had a bar...
I think it's illegal to serve alcohol in a bowling alley in MA. No kidding. Unless they've repealed that law recently and I didn't hear about it. Hey, they finally legalized Sunday sales, anything can happen.
There's a bowling alley near Alewife (Route 2, but walkable from the T -- there are sidewalks, but the area is not pedestrian-y the way Davis is). I think it has both candlepin and the other kind. (Yes, I am tired. I'm sure "the other kind" has a name.)
Hmmm, thanks for that info. I don't think we even have candlepin where I'm from; the term sounds vaguely familiar, but I've been to a lot of bowling alleys on the West Coast and I've never seen it. Think I'll try Lanes and Games instead...
Sacco's rules. Having been there once I could no longer escape its pull -- now every day I am thinking "bowling! I want to go *bowling*!" This is true even though I suck at candlepin.
Sacco's is candlepin (as you probably know). I am not a great bowler but it's TOTALLY fun!! We also went once to Lanes and Games (out by Alewife) and it was really crowded. There was a huge wait for "big ball" bowling (err, don't know what to call it), so we did candlepin where there was no wait. It's been a long time since I've gone, and I remember both places as being really smokey.
i hear that if you ask the dudes in sacco, they're ok with people bringing their own drinks. may be a vicious rumor, i dunno, but i'm really itching to head over to sacco's myself, for the pool tables. let us know how you like it!
Actually, I think we'll go to Lanes and Games instead; I'm willing to give whatever this candlepin thing is a try eventually, but I'd rather have standard bowling there too.

Sacco's does fill up, but it is "a local shop for local people." And you can always pop over to Red Bones for beer, too.
