Tomorrow night (Thursday, March 3) at 7 pm, John Roderick will present a talk titled Transportation Gateway to Northern New England: 175 Years of the Railroad in Somerville. The event will take place at the Somerville Museum, One Westwood Road (at Central St). Admission is $8 for nonmembers and $5 for members.

John Roderick has been a lifelong railroad and transportation history enthusiast. For ten years, he edited the B&M Bulletin, the official publication of the Boston and Maine RR Historical Society, and he has written numerous papers and articles on the subject.

As a Central Vermont enthusiast (with an obvious side interest in the B&M) and Union Square resident, I'll definitely be there. My interest in railroads and models has been on the side burner in recent years so it will be nice to meet Somerville locals with an involvement in B&M history.

As an aside, I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage people with any level of interest in the Central Vermont Railway to join the CV mailing list I set up many years ago when I lived in western Mass right on the CV/NECR tracks in Amherst:

It's a nice addition to other resources like the BMRRHS and the CVRHS.

John's talk on rail history in Somerville during the Somerville Historic Bike Ride a few years ago was great. (The ride visited sites of the forthcoming new Green Line Extension stations, some of which are close to location of old rail stations.)

Also fascinating was his talk at the Museum several years ago in which he showed his old slides of Davis Sq when the rail ran though it.
