So, I recently got a puppy, which means lots of a) going outside and b) anxiety about said puppy getting injured.  Which leads to c) my noticing that apparently, a lot of Somerville residents like to throw glass bottles and other glass objects extremely hard at the sidewalk.

Has anybody else noticed this?  It's not like I see people actually doing this, but I was kind of taken aback by how much broken glass I see no matter where I go.

EDIT: To fulfill demand of puppy pics:

It's not usually this bad. You'll notice a lot more trash on the sides of the road right now too. This is because all winter, the trash that would normally be swept away or at least blown off somewhere else wasn't. It was, instead, trapped in 6' deep snow mountains. Now that those have melted, we're left with 4 months worth of street trash at once.

I would guess that a lot of the glass around is actually pretty old, and therefore worn down and not very sharp. Probably not a big injury risk.

Is it really that bad in Somerville (I haven't been to Davis in a few weeks)? Not to be wah wah wah Cambridge is better, but last month Cambridge started doing street sweeping once there was a thaw. Even though no parking regs are in place until April 1, they did a decent job in the areas I tromp about in getting rid of the snowbank booty. It's just so nasty it really should be dealt with.

I saw this happening in Somerville too, on Beacon Street anyway. I doubt the City will get to side streets until April.

Good to know. Snow-melt leftover sludge is the worst thing ever. Ever.

Did you just "Pix or it didn't happen" to DAN?

For some reason I find that really funny.

My thoughts exactly: Sorry about the glass, but what I really want are pictures of the furball! :)

It is still possible to publicly link to Facebook images, but their new interface makes it hard to find the url. I was able to dig it out using Firebug. http://getfirebug.com/
If, after installing firebug, you right-click on the image and select "Inspect Element" it will bring up the source code. You should then be able to find the URL in what comes there. (Look for the string ending in .jpg)

You can also just open the photo itself in a new tab, rather than clicking on it and getting the black popup thing and then copy the image URL.

Oh, that's much simpler than what I suggested. Do that. :-)

glass, dogs, and rubber

For what it's worth my dog and I have been walking around glass-strewn cambridge and somerville for years without problems. Even delicate puppy feet are probably tough enough to be able to step on most broken glass without a laceration. Enjoy the puppy time and don't worry too much about the gross conditions out there. (earlier calls for photos seconded, obviously)

The place where broken glass really sucks is for cyclists. 120 PSI with thin road tires will often mean instant puncture when you hit a shard patch. I've long thought that glass bottles should be taxed and the revenues used to subsidize bike tires.

I was going to comment that the new parent phase of doggie ownership sometimes takes a while to pass, but it will eventually. :)

Also, thirded on photo request? I miss my dog!

It really does. When I first got my doggie 2 years ago, I took the poor thing to the vet every other day, freaking out over nothing.

yeah, agree. you really only have to worry about dog feet in the winter when everything is salted and frozen. short walks and wiping off their feet when you come in or using something like bag balm on the pads usually does the trick if it's particularly bad.

You can also refresh when the black box is up and it'll open again in a regular page. :)

You poor deluded man. That's not a puppy, it's a black mop dressed up in ribbons/dog harnesses! At least it's an adorable black mop.....:)

Congrats on the new puppy. I have noticed the same (and lots of other garbage my puppy wants to eat) as a dog owner and cyclist. I think part of the problem in Somerville are the small open recycling containers. People overload them and stuff ends up in the street and on the sidewalk. Both Cambridge and Medford moved to single stream recycling recently with large containers that have a proper lid. Maybe that's something to bring to the city? It won't solve the problem of littering, but it will help with the accidental garbage on the street.

Somerville Residents Must Wait for Citywide Single-Stream Recycling
The city is still evaluating data from the pilot program, which began in October.

Broken glass is not a big problem for my dog. There are other problems for dogs around Somerville: the random food scattered around the trashcan at the Community Path and Willow, the TV dinners left by Light Post #31 on the path, the crazy lady who is "feeding the birds" and throws bread in front of my dog and then tries to kick him when he eats the bread, the man on Highland who yelled at my dog to get off HIS sidewalk, and others.

She is ADORABLE. That's pretty hilarious, actually; my parents have a two-year-old Shih Tzu that I love, so it's not surprising that I find Linus so adorable. I didn't realize she was a Shih Tzu at first (the dark fur obscured her face? I don't know), but it seems they are following me. Absolutely gorgeous. :)

I think your dog is hungry. But seriously, it can't be that hard to pull back your dog from some trashy morsels on the path?

YEP. My parents seem to like letting Holly's hair grow out and she looks like an overgrown mop. Then they take her to the groomer and she looks like, well, a dog again.

I've never seen all-black; she's beautiful, though!
