Bob Slate's Porter Square store, at 1975 Mass. Ave., is selling everything for 50% off.

The people there aren't sure how many days or weeks they will still be open, so I suggest shopping soon.

The two Harvard Square stores have already closed, and I assume that any remaining unsold merchandise from those stores is now at the Porter Square store.

Sadface.

I wish they had been able to find a buyer. They will be missed.

I also wonder if that Japanese market is going to open on schedule. MORE FUN NEW BUSINESSES NOW PLEASE

Not as far as I know, but I imagine their supply chain for imported products from Japan is down for an unforeseeable period.

Sadface, yes, but much as I adore Bob Slate -- and believe me, I really really do -- I have trouble feeling sorry for small local businesses who "can't make a go of it" when they don't bother staying open past 6pm even one night a week. In my personal consumer habits/routines, stores that are routinely open until 9 or 9:30pm gain a huge tactical advantage, and for better or worse, that mostly includes chain stores.

I don't think that they "couldn't make a go of it," when they were open successfully for.. what? 25 years? including two locations in one of the highest rent districts in the state?

The owner wanted to retire after a life-time of a successful and well-loved business, but couldn't find a buyer. I'm going to guess that's because of the changing role of paper-goods in our world. It would have required a young and energetic buyer to completely re-tool the business. I'd say there's no shame in running a well loved business that lets the people who work there go home to have dinner with their families.

I can see why people over 70 might have chosen to retire rather than to work long hours when they couldn't find a buyer for their stores.

I got several nice things for a really good price there the other day. I recommend stopping by if you're in the market for any papery goods!

I used to buy paper there to make homemade envelopes. I'll miss them. :-(

They've still got some Crane's stationery on the shelves as of this morning, and some boxed invitations of various pre-printed stuff.

Also a fair bit of vellum and other stationery by the sheets, a smaller selection of wrapping paper, and some greeting cards. All out of journals, notebooks, fountain pens and boxed notecards with art on the cover. (I personally bought Bob Slate's very last spiral bound quad-ruled notebook. Sadness.) Some printer paper in colors which we stocked up on for kids stuff. Stickers and address labels, three ring binders, dividers, etc.

I went twice before anything was really on sale to stock up on the specific things I have always bought there over the years. But we made two more trips there this week anyway. Sigh.

Painters note: last time I was there they had a large selection of canvas stretcher-bars.
