We regularly provide dairy-free and gluten-free options at dinner. But if you have specific food needs, let us know asap. Services at Havurat Shalom are egalitarian, lay-led and usually involve a lot of singing.

Registration deadline: April 22, 2011. Dinner and the class are free, but you must register by April 22! RSVP to registrar@thehav.org or 617-623-3376.

Yiddish Poetry in the Original and in Translation

Maia Evrona will read her translations of the poets Anna Margolin, Abraham Sutzkever, Malka Lee and H. Leivick as well as recite the poems in the original Yiddish. There will be handouts with these and other poems in English, the original Yiddish and in transliteration, along with photographs and short articles. Discussion following the reading can center on the themes in the poets’ work, their lives, or her decisions as a translator. If you are already familiar with Yiddish poetry, you're encouraged to memorize a favorite poem to recite, in the original or in translation.

Maia Evrona is a poet and translator of Yiddish poetry, as well as something of a performer of poetry. This talent earned her the nickname of “Di Sheyne Leyenerin” or “The One Who Reads Beautifully” from Yiddish teacher Eliezer Niborski.
