It's the first day of Somerville Open Studios. If you see something awesome today, tell us about it? I'm gonna go tomorrow, so I plan to track down some of the studios y'all recommend.

Among my perpetual favorites from the past couple of years that I see on this year's guide are:
  • #19 Museum of Modern Renaissance - the old Masonic hall, whose entire inside surface is filled with paintings from Russian myth

  • #10 Behind the Mask Studios - a fantasy world of creature masks, from tiny to giant

  • #80 Hilary Scott - dragons, whimsical plants, text-art, critters peeking at you from the bookshelves...

This is completely self-serving, but we're in the house and would like company: come to #2 - we're awesome, i swear! We've got a portrait of Sarah Palin as a blow up doll, and tons of awesome photos, delicious cheese + wine, and an antsy parrot who wants more company!

AND WE WOULD LIKE MORE TRAFFIC!

Of course I recommend you check you check out Skunk (Skunkadelia). He's at his house again this year on Bartlett street, a couple blocks north of Vernon Street Studios. He's got giant (decorative, and slightly functional, as well) robots made out of recycled bike, car, and other machine parts.

#28 - Patrick Smith, a commercial airline pilot who writes Salon.com's Ask the Pilot column as well as a book by the same name. Travel photographs from all over the world.

we checked out behind the mask today and it was indeed awesome. My almost 4 year old son started out scared of some of the masks, but then asked to go in 4 times to see them. we might have to go back again tomorrow.

I'd love to ... except that I don't know how to find you all there with just LJ names. (Vernon Street looks like it has 100 or more artists in it)

If you have limited time or mobility, Joy St. Studios has a ton of neat artists in a densely-packed area. (Not Davis Square, but SOS-related, and you can take the trolley...)

Resa Blatman's studio at Vernon Street was simply gorgeous over the SOS weekend. http://resablatman.com
