I have had some very yummy cocktails and food at Sauce. It's like tapas, but more Italian-leaning in most cases. It's vegetarian- (but not really vegan) friendly, which I like. It's also loud inside, so not the best place for a quiet dinner, but a great place for girls' night out or after-work drinks or what have you.
I'd noticed when I skimmed the menu only about 3 vegetarian options, 2 of which seemed to be variations on quesadilla. Has it gotten better, or did I just miss a whole lot of the menu or something?
I'm a vegetarian, and I've found enough to eat. :-} Last time I was there I had garlic soup and the "mac and cheese made of gold," which was utterly yummy. There's also a white pizza, two kinds of bruschetta, and probably something else I'm forgetting.
Sauce is ok. i'm actually not terribly impressed by it. i've eaten at a few different "small plates"/tapas places... so it's not that aspect.
the food is good, but it's fairly expensive. it's nothing amazing though. i've tried a few different items each time. i would recommend at least giving it a chance once, but after my own repeated attempts, i'm honestly not that inclined to go again. they also need to train their waitstaff better. they just aren't attentive enough.
i'd probably go again if i didn't have to pay for it (though i go out to eat a decent amount... ) and if it was maybe with the drinks crowd.
Y'know, maybe it was just me, but I never found a single thing I was looking for in Disc Diggers. Thus, it was a constant feeling of discomfort to walk in, browse around, and suspiciously walk out empty-handed in a rush (to get to CD Spins before they close). I mean, I'm all for the smaller business making its ways and the roots that Disc Diggers has in the area, but I just never found it particularly useful.
As for Sauce, I'm pretty happy with it. It's obviously expensive, yes. Some of the plates they have, though, are pretty damn good. Well-presented, as well. I'm pissed they took the Butternut Risotto off the menu (though I hear tell that it may be a seasonal item). The Marco Polo Wings were sort of "eh," at least the one time that we had them. Mussels are good but not great (I suppose it's also winter). The Mini-Burgers are great, though much more expensive than White Castle's. The Lebanese Bread Salad is fantastic, as well as the Char-Grilled Vegetable Salad (though I've been wanting more broccoli and less cauliflower since the second time we got it).
The last time I was there, they'd since added larger meals to the bottom of the menu. I had the pan-seared cod with mashed potatoes; it was fantastic.
The wine list, while fairly extensive, seems to have some holes in it. No French wines by the glass, for instance. I'm a big fan of the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling Ice Wine, though. We've never had a wine we disliked there, though, so that's saying something.
The staff is pretty well-versed in the food and wines served, as well. We're continually impressed when we ask for a recommendation and get both honest replies and great suggestions.
When I first sat down in there, and to this day, I feel it's trying to be two different places at once. One, the right side, is a sports bar with plasma TVs and bartenders. The other, the left side, gives Temple Bar a run for its money with its muted but elegant decor, quiet atmosphere, and attentive, friendly staff. I like both sides and both ideals, but it places a lot of stress on the divider in the middle of the room in both the physical and the metaphorical sense.
Wow, that's got to be the most complex sentence I've written since college. Excuse me, I got carried away.
To wit, though, I'm usually the guy on the "nice" side who's wearing a dirty hoodie or a t-shirt with something offensive on it, sipping wine and talking with a companion or two over a few plates.
*shrug*
If it wasn't next-door to my girlfriend's apartment, I wouldn't go out of my way, but I'm glad that it's there and tend to stop in at least once every couple of weeks.
I don't, though I suppose it might look like I do. In all honesty, I was just looking to be distracted from work and ended up writing much more than I'd planned. :)
Me, I wish there was still a worthwhile used CD store in Davis. I hate CD Spins.
I agree whole heartedly. I really liked DD's especially that I could find CDs I liked and wanted and they undervalued at $3.99 all the time. And their no-scratch-buying policy ensured near perfect merchandise!
I guess that I'll have to head on down to Nuggets in Kenmore, otherwise, I don't know of any other good used record stores in Boston.
ditto to the above - spendy but super tasty. their risotto is hands-down one of the best in the area, i would say equal to or perhaps even better than the risotto at temple bar on mass ave.
whatever you do, don't listen when the server says that four plates per person is a full meal...it should be closer to three. i've actually had really excellent service from their server heather (ask for her!), who my boyfriend and i ended up with, randomly, several times. on separate occasions she has comped us a bottle of wine, a course of plates, and a dessert, sometimes to apologize for a kitchen screw-up, sometimes just to be nice. i would say the flow of their kitchen set-up is not the best, but they seem to be settling into it better as they go on.
i'm a big fan of sauce, although i'm bummed they took the mini burgers off the menu (they switch it up every once in a while). you can still get a burger there, just a regular sized one. and their fries are phenomenal, as is the sangria.
at the risk of sounding like a broken record after everyone else.... :D sauce is really good, kind of expensive, and four plates per person is too much food. i went with a friend of mine and we stayed for something like three hours, just talking (altho we did have dinner first... :> ), and the waitress made absolutely no move to kick us out. she just came by occasionally and refilled our water and asked if we wanted anything else, and otherwise left us alone. i thought it was really considerate, altho the place wasn't remotely full and they didn't need the table. and the food was really good.
Sauce is ok, but pretty expensive. For the same money I would rather go to Solea for Latin American tapas in Waltham. But, it's close, and the bar is fun.
i found the food at sauce boring. nothing i had there really struck me as "wow, this food is great. i wish i had the recipe," instead they were more like, "uh, i can make this myself in less time it took for them to bring it out, and it'll be more flavorful, inexpensive, and enough for 3 meals."
i'm kind of a food snob, though.
however--i was rather impressed by their pomegranate metropolitan. my friends had some other mixed drinks and they liked them as well. i don't know much about wine, but here's what my dinner companion said about their beer selection: "I think they had one or two belgian beers and a few decent domestic beers. Not a wide selection, but of the few they had, they made good choices."
i'd go back for a drink, but never for food. i thought it was a nice place to hang out a bit and socialize (atmosphere was pleasant and staff friendly), but not a good place for meals.
like the space. Like it a lot. will go back for drinks. food is average. extremely average in my opinion and the service wasn't very good. And even for tapas its not worth the $, especially given its blandness. And i'm not really a food snob. I'll eat frozen pizza or can go to Harvest in Harvard Sq. Love Urban Gourmet and think Diva is overrated (especially after eating the cheap way more delicious indian on 6th st in nyc for years).
I do like the space though, and drinks were good (though hard to screw up vodka tonics or guinness). Bartender was nice and polite and friendly etc., which is not a given anymore, though it should be.
I'd go back....if someone I was with someone who wanted to go, I'd go. Though it would not be my choice for dinner, i'd never pick it. But love the space and the design. very nice.
heyyyy...i also think diva is overrated. check out namaskar. i enjoy them a lot, they're probably my second favorite indian restaurant in the area, proceeded by kebob factory, across the street from dali (tapas place). namaskar gets more visits from me than kebob factory 'cause of distance/convenience. kebob factory has this dish that has silver sprinkles (edible!) mixed in--if you happen to have metal fillings, be careful. my bf got jolts of pain, 'cause silver conducts electricity. he said the dish was still really tasty, despite the pain.

Then again, I never went in looking for specific things.

Chacun a son gout, and all that.
(And to the original poster: I have NO idea what's going into DD's old location.)

Toasted is better than used cds?
Date: 2005-03-25 05:11 pm (UTC)Good lord.
Independent music store replaced by chain food store.
That is one bad trade in my opinion.
Ah well.

Date: 2005-04-01 12:48 am (UTC)I know you would. I miss crepes. Though the italian food joint that got bigger on Holland does have good pasta. I'd just rather eat crepes than pasta.
Remember the nutella and banana one we had?
