 Hi folks,

My friend is visiting Boston this weekend for the first time and he wants to see a play -- but nothing too mainstream. He prefers artsy and indie shows.

Where should he go? I tried checking the Somerville Theater, but there's only a concert playing there this weekend.

Also, his budget is $25.

Thanks!!

The Theatermania (http://www.theatermania.com/boston/shows/) listings should probably be his first stop.

I have heard good things about Learn to Be Latina (http://www.companyone.org/Season12/Learn_to_be_Latina/synopsis.shtml). I love the Gold Dust Orphans, too, but haven't seen their current show, Peter Pansy. (But you can't get much more artsy and indie than they do!)

I'd check out what's being performed at the Boston Center for the Arts, which encompasses a number of small venues and companies.

The Somerville Theatre is primarily a movie house and concert hall, and only very rarely presents live stage drama.

Discount tickets to plays are often available online at Bostix.org and day-of-show at the two Bostix booths at Faneuil Hall and Copley Square.

Perhaps The Donkey Show (http://www.americanrepertorytheater.org/events/show/donkey-show) would suit? If it were two weekends ago, I'd recommend Bellona, Destroyer of Cities at the ICA.

This. There's a lot of excellent "small" theater going on for $25 or less.

Closer to home than any of the other places named so far, check out the current show at Central Square Theater

Check what's playing at the ART. They've been putting on experimental theater that I've heard excellent things about in recent years, though I know nothing about their current show.

I'm hearing really great things about this show from Happy Medium Theatre, which opens on Thursday: http://www.happymediumtheatre.com/?cat=27

How did you find that show? When I went to Factory Theatre's web site, it is not listed.

Drat, Equus hasn't opened yet! (Fortunately, you got a lot of good recs.)

If he's into interactive theater and can deal with characters and audience members being cheerfully embarrassed, I recommend FishnetNetworks.net.

Nothing too mainstream? Artsy and indie? On a budget?
You want MOSAIC at ImprovBoston in Central Square. It's non-traditional non-illusory sketch theater - sometimes funny, sometimes not - about social, political, and personal topics.
The show is at 9:00 on Saturdays, and costs $10. There will be money left over for beer.

(Fair disclosure: I'm part of the group.)

Normally I'd suggest student theater, since there are dozens of plays at the colleges in the area. But this is the wrong time of year, since it's in between the school year and summer sessions.
