Definitely go for the meat (VERY good stuff), but the produce isn't of the same quality. Check across the street. Or, the hike to Porter Star Market isn't bad when its nice out.
Not only is the meat tasty, it's dirt cheap. McKinnons is an excellent meat place.
And I agree that the produce isn't quite as good, and the selection is necessarily limited, but it's not terrible and it's very convenient if you happen to be there anyway. If I wanted the produce to be the centerpiece of my meal I'd head to the Porter Square Star (on foot, bus, or T), or to Whole Foods at Alewife if I wanted something really spectacular, but if the meal's about the meat, McKinnon's is pretty excellent.
I also say a definite yes to McKinnon's for meat--very good quality, very cheap. I do most of meat shopping there and I don't even live in Davis Square anymore. I wouldn't do my major produce shopping there, but if I'm already in there and all I need is a pepper or onion or something I'll buy it there for convenience. When I lived in Davis Sq. I usually did produce shopping at the Porter Square Star Market.
They are great. The best thing is that they will special order and do a lot of prep for you. I had them do a thirty bone crown roast of pork, Frenched. They cryopacked all of the trimmings and charged me 1.99 a pound :)
You can also get them to do custom cuts but you need to go in the morning. They have an unlisted number but you can get it from one of the owners or head butchers.
I had a steak from them for dinner tonight, and last week I bought a 10# pork shoulder to smoke. I go there all the time. Market Basket in Union Square can be cheaper in some cases, but you can't beat the convenience and location of Mckinnon's, and as a previous poster noted, they'll do prep on the meats for you. My only complaint is that the jumbo eggs mess up my recipes, because they're too big!
Good meat. Excellent quality and very inexpensive. For deli meat, try Sessa's on Highland Ave (next to Poor little poor girl, or Rich little poor girl, can't remember which). Really great produce, fairly close walk from Davis: Pemberton Farms on Mass Ave. Kind of pricey, though
