those of you who've moved fairly recently - like in the last couple years - do you have any advice on moving companies? good experiences, bad experiences, who should i call, who should i avoid, that kind of thing. the last time i moved, i had a small enough amount of stuff that i rented a truck and my sister and i did it in an afternoon. i now have substantially more stuff and would rather hire professionals to do it, only i've never actually done it before. so i turn to you guys for help. :D

I HIGHLY recommend Precision Movers.

Very professional, great rates, and they had no bad reviews anywhere when I used them 3 years ago. (haven't looked since.)

A number of my friends and I have used Nick's: http://www.nicksmoving.com/

They were fast, had good rates and did a great job.

I'm about to move, so I don't have a recent recommendation, but two names that have come up favorably in this community over the last year or so are Precision Moving and Intelligent Labor.

I've scheduled my move with Precision Moving, and was happy with the prompt and thorough response I received to my request for an estimate. Can't say anything about the move itself (and since I'm not moving until mid-August, I expect I won't be able to offer one in time for it to be useful for you.)

I got a personal recommendation for my upcoming (this Wednesday) move, and went with Stairhoppers. They've been super helpful over the phone, and of course I don't know how they'll be at the actual move -- but the recommendation was ebullient. Ping me after Wednesday if you want a mini-review (since I'm unlikely to remember, in all the chaos). :)

I can't recommend Gentle Giant (http://www.gentlegiant.com/) highly enough. I've used them multiple times over the past few years and they've always been fantastic.

Oh, if you don't mind, I'm going to piggyback with another question here... Can anyone recommend JUST a truck-loading service? I'm moving in two weeks and my most able-bodied helpers have suddenly disappeared (turns out one friend is moving that weekend himself, another injured his back, and my brother just got a job in Ohio), so now my "team" is down to me and my 60-year-old parents.

I'm already renting a truck that we're driving ourselves, and can handle the boxes/small appliances/etc, but I worry that between the three of us we might have some trouble with the actual furniture.

This is a new turn of events, so I haven't looked into anything yet to see if the local moving companies offer this if you're not using them for the actual transportation. I will do my own research of course, but thought someone here might know offhand! Otherwise I might just put up a Craigslist ad (or here?) looking to pay someone to help for a couple hours one day. It's only a small one-bedroom apt; didn't take long, with help, when I moved in!

(Oh, and this is an out-of-state move, so I'm looking for JUST the loading, not for them to follow me to a second location and unload. My unloading friends/family in Pennsylvania are still intact so far. ha.)

I've used gentle giant (linked above) for both "come [load/unload] my truck" and "please load everything into your truck and drive it here then unload it". They'll do it based on an hourly rate and depending on time of day/date may have a minimum.

Good lord, YES. This. So much.

Clean Cut Movers (http://www.cleancutmovers.com/) are so very wonderful. When I moved out of my third floor apartment, I actually spent the day with them (to the point of grabbing a sandwich with them), and not only are they awesome movers, they're great guys.

Andrew is the man. He will take care of you and have a witty conversation with you while he's schlepping your stuff.

I an a number of my friends have also gone with Nick's, some of us several times now, and have no complaints.

I will bet you that most places will be willing to do that - you could probably give them a ring.

Going with "just some guy" on Craigslist might be cheaper, but possibly less reliable and almost certainly not insured.

I've moved with Olympia twice and was impressed, even on a hectic Sept. 1 move a few years ago! A friend of mine used to work there and had initially referred me to them. They're very familiar with the Davis area, I've found.

I bought a Groupon ($99 for $300 of service) to Road Warrior and won't need it (it was a complete impulse purchase after my sister used a "deal" for movers and saved some cash) before it expires in June 2012 , after all...if you (or anyone else here looking for movers) is interested, feel free to msg me.

I first used them for a small move in June 2000, and then about 3 years ago for a larger move, and most recently this past October for a fairly substantial move, and the quality has been consistently high for all of them.

I moved last year with Intelligent Labor, and they were fantastic, friendly, fast, and cheaper than quoted :) It's the first non-stressful move I have ever experienced, even though it was the first one where I really cared about the things being moved.

Boston Quality Movers! Haved used them twice and had great experiences both times. Not too expensive; accurate estimates of necessary time and costs; friendly and courteous people; but most importantly, they were careful with my stuff, didn't drop or break anything, and generally were very professional. I think their offices are in Allston.

Wicked Smart Movers - they are amazing and the prices are reasonable. I've used them for an unload only, a full move, and now I'm using them for to load the moving truck, as I'm moving out of state too.

I've used Stairhoppers twice and would highly recommend. Their price was the best quote, and the movers were professional, pleasant, on time, careful, and fast. Hope your move goes well!

I recommend AGAINST Nick's. I had one great experience with them but my last one was horrible. They arrived hours late, brought the wrong size trucks which caused lots of delays which greatly padded the hours they racked up (they doubled their original estimate of 6 hours as they tok 12 hours). Because they brought the wrong size trucks, the unloading was uncoordinated resulting in our apartment being lined with boxes and then boxed in by the furniture (instead of unloading furniture first and then boxes). Simply awful. I would never use them again.

My husband and I second and third this! We got a truck and they did the rest (tho they'll provide a truck for a higher fee). They were wonderful!!! Great price, awesome guys.
