Jul. 20th, 2011 03:56 pmI have a box that I just cannot bear to recycle.
It came with our copy of the Modernist Cuisine, and it is a marvel of cardboard engineering. It is unbreakable. It is uncrushable. You can probably pack your grandma's china in it, throw it out your third-floor window into a waiting truck, and expect the china to survive unscathed. Rumor has it the darn box alone cost 70 bucks to produce.
It's been sitting in my living room for months.
So, if you are planning to move your family heirloom across the country, let me know and I'll leave it out on the porch for you (North Cambridge, less than a mile from Davis).
With all the inserts, the box fits a 5 volume encyclopedia. If you take the inserts out, it'll fit considerably more.
ETA: here's a video of someone unboxing the Modernist Cuisine, which will give you a good sense of what the box is like. I believe I've lost the cardboard cones, but have everything else. http://seattlefoodgeek.com/2011/04/video-unboxing-of-the-modernist-cuisine-books/
