Has anybody else been experiencing performance issues this week with RCN internet access?  The CNET Bandwidth Meter shows me at  724 Kbps, and intermittenlty even slower, which is well below usual speeds.

Just curious .  . .

Also, hope to see folks at the Shakespeare Slam on Sunday at the Burren.  The Bard and beer generally blend quite well. 


ONE DAY LATER: Thanks to everyone who commented.  It surely sounds as if there is something going on with RCN's access speeds here in Somerville, and that it varies by time and location.  It's too bad: my service had been growing steadily speedier and more reliable in the past four years.  In fact,  I haven't seen performance fluctuations like these since the early 00s (pronounced "aughts," I think -- "naughts" if you're British).  I'm gonna give it a few days to see if it calms down, and then I'm going to try complaining to the local RCN engineering team.  (Having been unemployed since late February, I'm gradually recasting my professional identity as that of a reclusive curmudgeon.  Soon you'll be seeing me on my front stoop in my bathrobe, yelling "You kids pipe down, dammit" at innocent passersby.)

our house has RCN, and yes, several have noticed slowdowns in the morning. Clocking at 5.8 Mbps now.

RCN has explained this as a change to their system in Somerville, and suggested that replacing the cable modem in your home with a new one would resolve the problem.

Note that 6 hours after I had the problem, it went away on its own, so no idea if the tech was guessing or not.

We have been having troubles with our RCN cable modem service, it has become slow enough to mess up vpn access.

Might want to use http://ma.speedtest.rcn.net/ to make sure you've got reliable numbers. I also find power cycling my gear (modem and router) tend to fix most slowdowns. I haven't noticed anything this week though one way or the other, so I can't comment on that.

I've had periodic speed issues with RCN since getting it. It has been shakey this week, but so has LJ, so I wasn't sure which was which.
