Okay, so it isn't necessarily real, but our great city got mentioned in the Onion.

I live alone and I was very happy to know that I'm not alone in my soul crushing loneliness. ;)

Somerville has made The Onion before - "Something Wrong With Literally Everything In Apartment," so they definitely see a connection between Somerville & (substandard) apartment living!

Is it just me, or did anyone else, on reading that article, think that $1400 was a really good price for an apartment in this area?

That sounds a LOT like my old Somerville apartment. right down to the two-prong electrical outlets, the weird heat/cold, and the uneven floorboards!
I'd think it was my old apartment, but mine was only one bedroom. Maybe it was one of the other apartments in my building..?

For a two bedroom apartment? $1400 seems pretty high. Not horrible, but high. I think most people pay really high rents though, at least those who post on this community. I think the people paying the lower rents don't post here so much...

Trying to start the class war, I see. Davis is a really expensive area. $1400 for a 2-bedroom near Davis (let's say ≤1mi) is completely reasonable.

I was totally about to post this. I feel like it couldn't be more true.

I have a paper copy of this that my husband brought back from Philadelphia this weekend. I was very amused.

Bonus points for the Zardoz icon.

As a friend of mine said, the humor in that article lies in implying that nice single-bedroom apartments exist in Somerville.

My husband and I had a really nice one bedroom (with a dining room and a living room too). We paid less than $1000 for it too, and it was right next to the Mayor, and across from the Prospect Hill park/monument. This was a few years ago, but I imagine the rent is similar still. The landlady just wasn't that greedy, she cared more about getting people she liked into the place because she lived upstairs.

I could never afford to live on my own until I moved out of the city, but let me tell you, the soul-crushing loneliness at 31? ALL TRUE... I think it wouldn't have been so bad if I'd been able to stay in near Somerville, where everyone lives so close they're practically roommates anyway. :)
