Eye Doctor Recommendation

Anyone have a recommendation for a good eye doctor in the area? I need to get the full perscription workup, and my eyes are a little wonky so I'd prefer not to just wander into some "glasses store with attached eye doctor" without knowledge that they're pretty good, but I'd also prefer not to have to schlep down to Weymouth any more for an eye doctor who is fine but not wonderful.

If you don't mind a little bit of a schlep (but on the T), I highly recommend Dr. Sanford Monsein in Malden. Not only did I find him excellent, but I've recommended him to 3 of my friends, and they've all agreed. Friendly manner, he explains everything to you, and you really get the feeling that you're getting professional care. This man really knows his stuff.

I adore Dr. Duane Smith, the guy in the office with the Lenscrafters in the
Cambridgeside Galleria. I've been to him several times, and was there
two weeks ago, after having my purse stolen (with my eyeglasses in it).
He worked me in the same day, and then was very consoling about my plight.
They have all the latest equipment there.

There's a really awesome place in Porter, just across the street from the T stop. I haven't been there yet, but a couple friends of mine have with great success.

I went to Dr. Scott Sylvia at General Optical (just N of Porter Sq on Mass. Ave.) and he was pretty good. I thought it was neat when he gave me a printout of a photo of my retinas.

If you mean Parrelli Optical, I second this suggestion. I've been going there for years. The place has excellent customer service and John [the owner] is well versed in eyecare.

I second this recommendation. He's done my last two pairs of glasses. I found him to be very competent. He's also involved in HIV/AIDS activism and diversity training, so I'm comfortable around him and happy to give him my business.

I found them to be helpful for glasses, but depending on how wonky your eyes are (I'm high myopic), you may get a nasty surprise. I came to an appointment and got a lecture by the optometrist about how I shouldn't wear contacts because blah blah blah - on the surface of it, a certain justification since a lot of my sight is in one eye, but completely contrary to every other optometrist I've ever been to. Essentially the highly conservative approach. I've been wearing them since 4th grade, take meticulous care of them, and have never had an eye infection. I was really ticked - if they weren't willing to do contacts, a phone call would have sufficed.
