Found Keys

Last night around 7:00pm I found a set of three keys on the sidewalk, near the intersection of Benton and Westwood in Somerville (Spring Hill). Also had a few non-key items attached - if you lost them and can identify, let me know.

X-posted to Craigslist: http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/laf/2583739824.html

Will drop off at Somerville PD in a few days if no response.

do these keys have any membership cards? those always claim to reunite the owner with their keys..

All the membership cards on *my* keychain are from the sidewalk. Lord only knows who is listed for those cards. Luckily, I now have a small USB stick attached as well, containing my name and contact info.

Do those cards do you any good if they aren't registered to you? I get useful spam from CVS containing coupons that I can use only in conjunction with my card. Ditto for Staples. You won't get those if you're using somebody's random lost card.

My Shaws membership card gets me discounts at the register and occasionally special coupons with my receipt (which I then needs a card again to redeem them with). I think my sister's CVS membership has similar printout-with-purchase benefits? But I do not remember for certain.

At the very least, it could do you the minor good of not having someone pester you about registering for a card every time you shop there. This is pretty much why I signed up for a Shaws card at first!

Sure I do! When I check out at CVS, I get printed coupons that I can scan next time, but only with the card. I haven't tried using them with someone else's card, which I would like to do -- then you could have an anonymizing pool of cards.

I don't want mail from CVS, electronic or otherwise.

If you try using the CVS coupon from card A with card B, I think the register (or self-checkout) will reject it.

They don't spam me that much -- once a week or less, often with useful coupons like $4 off a $20 purchase, or $5 off $25. As for printed mail, they've sent me maybe 3 or 4 coupons a year.

Oh, and of course I always get the "special offer" prices that are only available with the card.

You should probably hand them to somerville pd sooner than later. Craigslist and LJ are not the first places someone goes to look for their lost keys.

Exactly. Now, because I do happen to read Davis Square regularly I guess if I lost my keys in Davis Square I'd probably learn about them if someone posted to Davis Square, but it would never, ever occur to me to look on Craig's list, or to check the LiveJournal community if I didn't already read it (and though this is an active community, I don't think it's reasonable to assume that there's a terribly good chance of random person visiting Davis Square checking in here).

If what I lost wasn't very valuable to me, I'd probably followup briefly with businesses I was last at before I noticed the loss, but then just let it go.

If what I lost was valuable, I'd probably check the businesses I was last at, or were near where I suspected I'd lost my keys (and I'd retrace my steps), and then I'd probably contact the police department. By the time a "few days" goes by, I'm just going to take steps to replace/cancel/learn to live without, and won't bother checking in (again) with the police.

I see it more as a signal boost. "Oh hey, my *friend* lost his keys! I should show him this."

it would be just as useful for the OP to have said "I found a set of keys near place that are now in the hands of somerville PD (call phone-number if you think they're yours)" for the purpose of signal boost.
