So I've decided that I need to expand my knowledge of rye. I'm looking for a place that has a number (at least three, more is better) different ryes in stock so I can taste and compare.

Davis is of course preferable, because it's nice to be in stumbling distance of my bed after a tasting, but I'm willing to travel - hell, even to cross the river, so long as it's T-accessible so nobody has to be designated.

Since discovering a love of manhattans, I will be watching this post. :)

I asked, and my husband said he thinks The Foundry has at least 2 or 3; not sure if you're looking for a store that offers tastings, or a well-stocked bar. (Hubby is a bourbon fan, was not specifically looking for Rye, so... we could be mistaken. :) )

I haven't been there yet, so I'm basically just posting a wild guess, but I've heard that Five Horses Tavern has an excellent Kentucky bourbon & whiskey selection. Given the number of Kentucky ryes, I'd say they're a good bet.

They do indeed have a good selection, and some fun bourbon cocktails to boot.

God I love bourbon. Good thing it's game day!!!

Buy a bottle of Rittenhouse, tasty value, if you can find it... (they have been having distribution issues in this area).

I can't promise that they have three kinds of rye, but Cambridge Wine & Spirits in the Fresh Pond mall is my go-to for a broad selection of liquor.

I had a similiar urge to learn about Malt Whiskey a few years back. I found a very well stocked liquor store that sold the "airplane sized bottles" of whiskey samples, and was able to taste quite a few (btw, I discovered I hate anything with the word "bourbon" associated with it). The best stocked store was in Boston across the street from the State Street T entrance (the entrance closest to Fanuel Hall).

You're thinking of Federal Wine & Spirits.

Yep, Federal. They are very good for some things, and they're really nice about doing special orders, but their rye selection is pretty tiny. Downtown in Davis has a better one, and the staff know the stuff.

An Article about Rye you might enjoy. You might also give a quick phone call to a couple of local places, including the liquor store up in Ball Square. But yes, to some restaurants as well. I'd certainly start with the foundry, and while it's bus (not underground) accessible, you might also call The Independent in Union Square. They seem like the type of place that might have that kind of selection. Also, give a place like Cuchi Cuchi a call. I know they have amazing Tequilla...who knows if they have a rye tasting?

Russell House Tavern in Harvard Square has a good selection, too-- Van Winkle, Rittenhouse, High West...

Not sure about selection, but I do know that Flatbread serves the somewhat-local (Gloucester, MA) Ryan and Wood Rye Whiskey. Bottles sold at Downtown and Pemberton, I believe, too.

Shameless plug, R&W's tours are awesome, too.

Russell House in Cambridge is a good place to try. I've noticed some good rye on the shelves at Green Street Grille in Central as well.

For purchasing and advice, I highly recommend the selection and the folks at Liquor World in Porter Square. The name is off-putting.... but they have an expert selection of spirits and knowledgeable staff.
