Former Davis Square resident Heather Albano is pleased to announce the publication of her first novel!

TIMEPIECE is a steampunk time travel adventure about a girl, a pocket watch, Frankenstein’s monster, the Battle of Waterloo, and giant clockwork robots taking over London - no, really - and it was largely written in Davis Square coffee shops!

Download it for your Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Timepiece-ebook/dp/B005QD0TGG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317661582&sr=8-1

Download it for your Nook: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/timepiece-heather-albano/1106037183?ean=2940013366398&itm=1&usri=heather%2balbano

I'm pretty damn sure I've seen that face in the Diesel, and I have connections on LinkedIn that vouch for her having been here, so...

...!? is this some new thing to call it The Diesel? is this like The Google or something?

I often call it "the Diesel" (without the capital The) rather than "Diesel Cafe". Ditto for "the Someday".

whaaat. i have no idea how i missed that train, i've never heard it called that, only just "diesel" or "diesel cafe."

(i'm not calling BS on it, just honestly bemused)

also "the 1369", in Inman or Central square. (But never "the Starbucks" or "the True Grounds")

Heck, at this point we may as well list all of our favorite coffee places. I was about to add in "the Sherman" in Union Square (but never "the Bloc 11", though I do like them as well)

I've always called it "the diesel". (And it was back then that I used to go there, now that you mention it...)

I remember when the Diesel opened, and I have always referred to it that way. I also do this with theaters: the Kendall, the Brattle, the Somerville, the ART. And bars, to some extent. And who can forget "Dolly's at the Kay & Chips"?

I think the rule is basically, if it's "X cafe" you can call it "the X," but if it's "Y's cafe" or "cafe Y" you have to call it "Y" for short. Same if instead of "cafe" you have "restaurant," "bistro," "theater," "diner," or "bar and grille," etc.

PS: does this mean I should be posting to DSLJ every time I publish something?

no, just every time you publish a first novel :)

I've been a Davis Denizen since the early 1990's and this is the first I've heard of it being called "the" Diesel. Although I always called it "the" Someday...amongst other things.

Though Starbucks has lots of locations so you could use "the Starbucks" to mean "that *particular* Starbucks". (i.e. in the airport, "I'm going to run to the Starbucks by the security checkpoint to get coffee. Do you want one?"). Does that count? :)

Oh, it can be the true grounds. Definite articles for everything! It is because I studied the Greek though, most likely.

hahaha, i'm greek-american but I don't like definite articles in english! your comment made me laugh though because i totally know what you mean :P

I can definitely say "the True Grounds" or even "the Starbucks," especially if I have a particular Starbucks in mind and my listener would know which one I mean. Almost like "I'm headed to the Starbucks across the street." gets shortened to "I'm headed to the Starbucks."

I think I only drop the "the" when it's "A Diesel meetup" sort of thing. But now, you have me curious.. I'm going to see if I can watch what I call it without getting self-conscious aforehand...

hahah this is like those tests to see if you call a highway or interstate "the [number]" or just "[number]" and whether or not that says what part of the country you're from. cracks me up when i hear people say they got stuck in traffic on "the 93" or something, though you'd be OK to say traffic on "the pike" sucked.

jfc what have i done with this grammatical quibble!?!

I think it's a Boston thing. Having worked a bit in EMS, a lot of hospitals get a "the" prefix ("En route to the General", "Head over to the Brigham..."). Only exception I can think of is Boston Medical Center, although usually that gets shortened to "the BMC". :)
